Frank Ernest Hofmann

    

     Frank E. Hofmann of Tewksbury, formerly of Wilmington and Malden, died Friday, May 23, 2008 at the Wingate at Andover Nursing Home in Andover, he was 78.  Born on April 14, 1930 in Melrose, he was the son of the late Frank E. Hofmann, Sr. and Dorothy C. (Jones) Hofmann.  Frank was raised and educated in Melrose and was a graduate of Melrose High School with the Class of 1948.  After he completed high school, Frank enlisted into the U.S. Air Force on October 2, 1950.  Frank was part of the inaugural 3635th Combat Crew Training Squadron which trained Air Force pilots how to survive in enemy territory had their aircraft been shot down or if they needed to eject due to an emergency.  He received the National Defense Service Medal as well as the Good Conduct Medal for his service.  Frank was honorably discharged on October 1, 1954 in Reno, NV. 

     Upon his return home, Frank married his beloved companion, Irene G. Heath, in Easton, MA on August 17, 1957.  Frank and Irene lived in marriage together, raising and caring for their family for almost 51 years.  Frank worked for Commercial Filters, once located across from Pine Banks.  He eventually went to work for Watts Regulators where he worked for over 35 years as a product manager.  During his time at Watts, Frank went to school at night at the then Lowell Technological Institute, earning his Associate’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering.  Frank retired from Watts Regulators Co. in 1997 but continued to work part-time for the company until he officially retired in 2001.

     Frank was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Malden as well as a long time member of the Boston Baptist Social Union.  He was also involved with the Wakefield Retired Men’s Club as well as the Tewksbury Senior Center.  He enjoyed playing cards at the senior center, especially cribbage.  Frank loved the outdoors; he enjoyed hiking and woodworking.  He was involved with the Boy Scouts Troop 776 in North Reading.  Frank was also an avid golfer.  

     Frank is survived by his beloved wife Irene G. Hofmann of Tewksbury, his sons, Peter F. Hofmann of Haverhill, Jeffery S. Hofmann of Bradford, and Steven P. Hofmann of Haverhill, his sisters, Elaine Gelardi of Wakefield, Beverly Sheehan of Wakefield, Marlene Sinagra of Everett, and Jacqueline May of Malden, his grandson, Jesse H. Hofmann of Salisbury as well as many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Frank was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Hofman.

     A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2008 at 11AM in the First Baptist Church, 493 Main Street, Malden, MA.  Rev. Martha A. Dominy, Pastor of the First Baptist Church will be officiating.
