Thomas Donald Rivers
Thomas
Donald Rivers, 94, a longtime resident of Malden, died
Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital in
Melrose. Thomas was born in Pepperell, MA, in 1914, the son of
Donald T. and Olive (Davis) Rivers. He grew up spending time in
both Maine and in the Boston area, and graduated from Boston
Trade School in 1932. In 1934, He married his sweetheart, Lilah
Ames, and in 1941, the two bought a home and settled in Malden
to raise their family. Thomas and Lilah shared over 65 years
together until Lilah's passing in 2001.
Although his
many children prevented him from serving in WWII, Thomas helped
the homefront effort by going to work at the Naval Shipyard in
Boston. Shortly after the war, Tom helped found the
Rivers-Maloney Construction Company. The company ran from 1948
to 1956, at which time he founded the Rivers Construction
Company, which is still in existence today. Thomas was a
longtime active member of the Lodge of Sterling in Malden, and
was also a member o the Aleppo Temple Shrine. He enjoyed
playing cards with his daughters and granddaughters, but
throughout his life what he enjoyed most was being with his wife
Lilah.
He is survived
by his children, Joan L. Chuha and husband Steve of Stoneham,
Thomas D. Rivers Jr, and wife Anne Rivers of Malden, John R..
Rivers of Malden, Charles Rivers and wife Lois of Wakefield,
Robert Rivers and wife Diane of Malden, Jack Rivers and wife
MaryRose of Malden Bruce L. Rivers and wife Gail of Malden, and
Vera A. Rivers and husband Charlie of Malden, Linda O. Burdick
of Malden, his very dear niece Louise Ames of Malden, as well as
many other nieces and nephews, 31 grandchildren, 59 great
grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren.
He was
preceded in death by his wife Lilah (Ames), his parents, Donald
and Olive (Davis) Rivers, his daughter Dawn E. Prestone, his
brother Clarence Rivers, and his sisters Mabelle Ragusa, and
Alice Sullivan.

Visitation
will be held at Weir MacCuish Funeral Home, 144 Salem Street,
Malden on Friday, Jan 23rd, from 2 to 8 PM. Funeral
services will be held Saturday, January 24, 2009 at 10:00 A.M.
in the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Puritan Lawn
Memorial Park, Peabody.
