Dorothy
Mildred (Oaks) Shannon, 98, a longtime resident of Malden, passed
away on Thursday, November 18, 2010 at the Bear Hill Nursing
Center in Stoneham,
She was born
August 1, 1912 in Swampscott, Massachusetts the daughter of
Milton and Mildred (Travis) Oaks. She grew up residing in
Medford and then Malden, graduating from Malden High School
with the class of 1929. After high school, she attended
Business School to continue her education. In 1938 she married
her sweetheart, John L. Shannon, in the First Universalist
Church of Malden. The two then settled down in Malden to raise
their family. Dorothy became an active volunteer at the Malden
Hospital. She volunteered for over 50 years at the hospital
until its closing, at which point she was managing the Gift
Shop. She was also a long time dedicated member of the Jr.
Aide Association of Malden. Dorothy enjoyed cooking and sewing,
and was an accomplished artist who often worked in watercolors,
and especially liked to paint floral displays. She also loved
to travel, and enjoyed trips to Alaska and Europe, but the most
important thing to Dorothy was her family.
She is
survived by her children, Robert Shannon of Reading, and
Marjorie J. Shannon of Plaistow, NH, her grandchildren,
Laurie J. Shannon, Robert L. Shannon Jr, and Todd D. Shannon,
and her great grandchildren, Tyler and Grace.
Dorothy was
preceded in death by her husband John L. Shannon, her Parents,
Milton and Mildred (Travis) Oaks; and her brother Robert Oaks.
A memorial
service will be held at The First Church of Malden,
Congregational, 184 Pleasant Street, Malden on Tuesday, November
23rd, at 11 AM
