Sililo Tipa
Tanielu

Sililo Tipa
Tanielu, 67, of Malden, formerly of Hawaii and Samoa, died
Saturday, November 14, 2009 at the Beth Israel Deaconess
Medical Center in Boston. Sililo was born and raised in Samoa,
the son of High Chiefs Tanielu and Elena (Tuiloma) Uso. He was
one of 15 children. While in Samoa, he farmed and had banana
plantations, and he also had a government job constructing
schools and other municipal buildings. He moved to Hawaii where
he found employment building and replacing roofs. While in
Hawaii, he fell in love with and married Carol A. (Byrd) Johnson. The two
were married in 1985. They moved to Samoa until 1991
when they came to New England to help care for her mother. They
soon settled in Malden and became part of the community. Sililo
took employment at the Boston Metal Company in Medford, where he
has worked for the past 20 years.
Sililo was
well know for his smile and sense of humor, and always had a
"larger than life" presence. His Christmas decorations were
always the talk of the neighborhood, and usually took weeks to
set up. He loved fishing and dancing, and was a skilled
musician who could play guitar, harmonica, and ukulele. He was
kind, friendly, and polite, a true gentleman. His favorite
pastime was gardening and tending to the yard, and his family is
what meant the most for him. He always kept his siblings in his
heart and there was nothing he wouldn’t do for them.
He is survived
by his wife Carol Tanielu of Malden, his children, Tami Tanielu
of Honolulu, HI, Fa'auiga Tanielu of LA, Rose Marie Johnson of
Laguna Hills, CA, Paul C. Johnson of CA, J. Eric Johnson of
Laguna Hills, CA, Dr. Alfred M. Johnson of Huntington Beach,
CA, Peter M. Johnson of Mission Viejo, CA, his sisters, Ula
Sigfaloa of Hawaii and Fiapaipai Tanielu of Samoa, and his
grandchildren, Tylor N. Johnson and Kate Ann Johnson.
He was the uncle of many, many nieces and nephews.
He was
preceded in death by his parents, Tanielu Uso and Elena (Tuiloma) Uso,
and twelve of his siblings.
