Sarah Elizabeth Welch

Sarah E. (Parson) Welch, a long-time resident of Malden, died Wednesday, April 8, 2009 at the Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston, she was 92.  Born on March 27, 1917 in Good Irons, SC, she was the daughter of the late Calvin and Frances (Morrel) Parson.  At a young age, Sarah moved to Andrews, SC to live with her great aunt after her parents died.  She was raised and educated in Andrews, SC before she and her sister, Evelyn, relocated to the Boston area when Sarah was in her late teens.  It was in Boston where Sarah met the love of her life, Robert N. Welch.  The sweethearts were married in Boston on September 28, 1938.  Shortly thereafter, Robert was deployed into service for our country during World War II.  Sarah briefly relocated their growing family to her sister’s home in Buffalo, NY while Robert was on active duty.  Upon his discharge, the Welch’s returned to the Boston area, settling in Everett in 1945.  In 1956, the family moved to their home in Malden where they have been since.

Sarah had worked many years as a nurse’s aide in various healthcare institutes in the area.  She worked for the now closed Mansion Nursing Home in Malden before going to work for the McFadden Manor Nursing Home in Malden.  She was employed many years with McFadden before an injury sustained at work forced her into an early retirement in 1979.  Sarah was a long-time and a founding member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Malden.  She was very active in all church activities including both the Progressive Eight and the Five Fold Clubs, groups dedicated to increasing the beauty of the church.  While Sarah was an avid amateur home decorator, an enthusiastic gardener and lover of plants, her true passion was her family.  Always a dedicated mother, Sarah loved taking care of her family.  She was so gracious to even extend herself and her home to over 22 foster children over the years.

Sarah is survived by her beloved husband of over 70 years, Robert N. Welch, Sr. of Malden, her children, Robert N. Welch, Jr. of New York, NY, Stanley H. Welch of New Haven, CT, Ronald A. Welch of Denver, CO, Sharon E. Stepherson of Malden, and Kevin E. Welch of Malden, 20 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.  She is also survived by many loving extended family members.

In addition to her parents, Sarah was preceded in death by her siblings, Ross, Henry, and Samuel Parson, Evelyn (Parson) Mendes, and Ida (Parson) Barr.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 11, 2009 at 11AM in the Emmanuel Baptist Church, 20 Hillside Avenue, Malden, MA 02148.  Family and friends are invited to the church for a visitation period prior to the service from 10 to 11 AM.   Rev. Wayne A. Gadie, Pastor of the Emmanuel Baptist Church will be officiating.  Burial will follow in the Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody.
