Helen Adeline Atwater

     Helen A. (Thompson) Atwater died Monday, May 15, 2006 at her home in Malden, she was 86.   Born in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, Canada on April 20, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Blanche (Hewey) Thompson.   Helen moved to the United States from Canada when she was 16.  She was educated between both schools in Boston and in Canada until she graduated high school.  She met her husband, Joseph B. Atwater at Rock Hill Baptist Church in Jamaica Plain, MA and the two were married on April 25, 1942 in Melrose.  They spent almost 43 years in marriage together until Joseph’s passing on January 8, 1985.  Helen spent many years caretaking for the elderly but her real job was raising and caring for her family.  Mrs. Atwater was a resident of Malden for over 70 years.  

     She is survived by her children, David B. Atwater and his wife, Jeanne of West Lake Village, CA, John C. Atwater of Ventura, CA, Ruth H. Collins of Malden, and Michael N. Atwater of Salem, NH, her siblings, Aubrey Thompson of Canada and Nellie Nilsen of Portland, ME, twelve grandchildren, one great-grandchild as well as several nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her sisters Violet Crouse and Flora Thompson.

Visitation will be held at the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem St. Malden on Thursday, May 18, 2006 from 4-8 PM.  

     A funeral service will be held at the First Baptist Church, 493 Main St. Malden on Friday, May 19, 2006 at 10 AM.  Rev. Martha A. Dominy of the First Baptist Church will be officiating.  Burial will immediately follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.
