Jo-An Dunn (McNamara) Barchard

November 20, 1930 - July 11, 2010
Jo-An
Dunn Barchard died Sunday morning, July 11, 2010 at the North
Shore Medical Center in Salem, MA, she was 79. Jo-An was born
and raised in Wakefield, the daughter of the late Daniel J. &
Anna M. (Dunn) McNamara.
Jo-An
was educated in the Wakefield school system and was a graduate
of Wakefield High School Class of 1948. After graduation she
went on to John Robert Powers finishing school. She was a
representative for the Germain Montiel Beauty line of products.
Jo-An
later married her husband Arthur H. Barchard and the couple
settled in Malden and raised their family. She was later
employed by the Jordan Marsh Company in Malden as an Elizabeth
Arden representative.
Throughout the years Jo-An was an active member in local
politics. During the mid to late 1960’s she became President of
the “Malden Action Committee” serving with the late Mayor Walter
Kelliher. She was also a member of the Massachusetts Chapter for
the Senior Action and was a regular at the State House fighting
for senior rights, which she received an award for her work from
Congressman Barney Frank in 2009. She loved politics, being a
democrat and most of all she loved being Irish; she was a true
Kennedy girl. In her spare time she enjoyed caring for family,
and caring and helping her friends with their shopping
needs. She enjoyed long rides to New Hampshire and Maine and
enjoyed a good Red Sox game on the radio.
She leaves behind her daughters, Charlotte Siuda and her husband
Stephen of Malden, Cathleen Murdocca and her husband Vincent of
Wakefield, Cynthia Andreotti and her husband Rocco of Everett,
Julianne Barchard of Malden and Jo-An Barchard and her fiancé
Al Gardner of Stoneham. Jo-An was the cherished grandmother of
eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren whom she loved
dearly. She also leaves behind several nieces, nephews,
grandnieces, grandnephews and many dear friends.
She was
preceded in death by
her
two
sisters, Thelma McDonough and Lillian Barry and
her late twin brother John McNamara.

at the Weir-Mac Cuish Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 13th.
2010 from 2-4 & 7-9 PM.
In lieu of flowers contributions in Jo-An’s memory may be made
to the National World War II Memorial, 700 13th. St. NW Suite
800, Washington, DC 2005
Funeral will be held from the Weir-Mac Cuish Golden Rule Funeral
Home, 144 Salem St., Malden, on Wednesday, July 14, at 8:45 AM
followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in Sacred Hearts Church,
297 Main St., Malden, at 10AM. Interment will follow in Forest
Dale Cemetery, Malden, MA |
