Mrs. Ethel Louise Battle

Ethel L. (Bennett) Battle of Melrose, formerly of Malden, passed away on September 19, 2010 in the Melrose –Wakefield Hospital in Melrose, she was 92.  Born on December 16, 1917 in Sandwich, NH, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Mary (Davis) Bennett.  Ethel was raised and educated in Tamworth, NH and was a graduate of Tamworth High School.  In 1942, Ethel married the love of her life, Eugene E. Battle, in Boston while he was on leave from serving our country during World War II.  Upon Eugene’s honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy, the couple settled in Malden where they lived for over 49 years until they moved to Melrose.  Ethel and Eugene spent over 61 years in marriage together until his passing in July of 2003.  Devastated by the loss of her husband, Ethel was strong-willed and determined to maintain her independence.  A sweet woman to all, she kept her self occupied with arts and crafts and other hobbies.  Having never really been able to overcome the loss of her husband, Ethel is surely now at peace in eternity with Eugene.

In addition to her husband and parents, Ethel was preceded in death by her brothers, Roland A. and Lawrence E. Bennett.

A funeral service will be held in the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem Street, Malden, MA on Thursday, September 23, 2010 at 10AM.  Rev. Martha Dominy, Pastor of the First Baptist Church in Malden will be officiating.  Burial will follow in the Lakeside Cemetery, Wakefield.
