Gertrude
Elizabeth Burgess
Gertrude E. “Gerty” (Lucas) Burgess of Malden died Wednesday,
December 5, 2007 at the Kindred Hospital in Peabody, she was
82. Born on October 16, 1925 in Charlestown, MA, she was the
daughter of the late William J. and Lydia (Rogers) Lucas.
Gerty was raised and educated in Charlestown. She married her
sweetheart, Clarence R. “Rodney” Burgess, on January 16, 1941 in
Charlestown at the St. Mary’s Church. After they were married,
Rodney and Gerty moved to Charlestown for a short while before
finally settling in Malden to raise their family. Rodney and
Gerty spent over 49 in marriage together before Rodney’s passing
in September of 1990. Gerty worked as a lens technician for the
Polaroid Company in Cambridge. She worked for over 27 years
until she retired in 1987. Gerty thoroughly enjoyed playing
Bingo at all of the area halls. More importantly, she
absolutely adored and loved her grandchildren. Gerty had been a
resident of Malden for over forty years.
Gerty is survived by her children, Donna M. Ranson and her
partner, Bill O'Brien of Billerica, L. Lourene O'Brien of
Malden, Virginia and her husband, Robert McElroy of Millis,
Thomas R. Burgess of Florida, Patricia A. and her husband,
Joseph Pantone of Malden, and Richard J. Burgess and his
partner, Benedict Mitrano of Andover, her sister, Virginia
Kelley of Moultonboro, NH, her grandchildren, William and Derek
O'Brien, Brendan, Ashley, and Madeline McElroy, Thomas Shidlow,
Brittany, Michael, and Danielle Pantone, and her
great-grandchildren, Blake, Jillian, and Jared O'Brien. Gerty
is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to
her husband and parents, Gerty was preceded in death by her
brothers, William and E.J. Lucas, and her sister, Eleanor
Hannah.
Funeral from the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144
Salem Street, Malden on Monday, December 10, 2007 at 8:45 AM
followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in Sacred Hearts Church,
297 Main Street, Malden at 10 AM. Fr. Daniel J. Hickey, Pastor
of Sacred Hearts Church will be the celebrant. Burial will
immediately follow in the Puritan Lawn Memorial Park in Peabody.
Visitation
will be held in the funeral home on Sunday, December, 9, 2007
from 4 to 8 PM.
