Doris Evelyn Coles
Doris E. (Barkhouse) Coles
of Malden, died suddenly, Tuesday morning, March 27, 2007 at the Whidden
Memorial Hospital in Everett, she was 84. Doris was born on August 24, 1922 in
Cambridge; she was the daughter of the late Ralph & Gretchen (Voroom) Barkhouse.
Mrs. Coles was educated in
the Malden School System and was a graduate of Malden High School Class of 1940.
After her education, Doris would later meet and marry her sweetheart Ellerton
G. Coles in St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in 1941. The couple would spend the next
twenty-seven years together in Malden, raising their daughter Marcia. As a
family, they enjoyed many summers in Cohasset at their summer place. In late
December of 1968, Ellerton would pass on. After the death of her husband, Doris
began working as a telephone operator for the New England Telephone & Telegraph
Company at the Elm St. Malden office in the information services department.
After eighteen years of service, Doris would retire in 1987. She had been a
member of the New England Telephone & Telegraph, Pioneers Club.
Doris was a life long and
active member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, were she co-headed the church’s
thrift shop. She was a longtime member of the Woodmen of the World Organization.
Doris enjoyed traveling to Florida visiting her sister and brothers and was an
avid fan of the Boston Red Sox.
She is
survived by her daughter Marcia J. Sullivan and her husband Michael P. Sullivan
of Malden, her sister, Nancy Figueiredo of Florida, her brothers, Edwin
Barkhouse of Alabama, Gordon & Frank Barkhouse both of Florida, her
grandchildren, Michael Sullivan of Florida, Lee Sullivan of Reading, and Laurie
O'Rourke of Franklin and her six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death
by her husband, Ellerton G. Coles, her brothers, Harry, Hubert, and Ralph
Barkhouse.
Visitation will be held in
the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem St. Malden on Friday,
March 30, 2007 from 4-8 PM.

Funeral from the
Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem St., Malden, on Saturday,
March 31, 2007 at 9 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Luke’s
Episcopal Church, 388 Lynn St., Malden at 10 AM. Rev. Dr. Charles Moore, Jr. of
St. Luke's Episcopal Church will be officiating. Burial will immediately follow
in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody.
