Mary
Josephine Colwell
Mary J. “Jo” (MacInnis) Colwell of Malden, died Thursday,
February 8, 2007 at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, she was 89.
Born in Glengary, Nova Scotia, Canada on July 5, 1917, she was
the daughter of the late Martin and Catherine Ann (Gillis) MacInnis. Jo was raised and educated in Nova Scotia and
was a high
school graduate. When she was in her twenties, Jo moved to
Allston. She soon met her sweetheart, Charles V. Colwell, and
the couple married on March 5, 1946. After they were married,
Charles and Jo moved to Malden to begin their family. They
spent over 30 years in marriage together, raising and caring for
their family until Charles’ passing in 1976. Jo worked as an LPN
for many area nursing homes and facilities. She began as a
waiver LPN when she graduated from night nursing classes in
Malden High School. In 1976, Jo earned her certificate
from the
Chelsea Soldiers Home to be a certified LPN. She worked many
years at the Wellington Street Nursing Home in Arlington but spent her final
years in the Carewell Nursing Home located on Summer St. in
Malden. Jo worked for over 40 years in the nursing field until
she retired in 1990. Mrs. Colwell had been a Malden resident
for over 60 years.
Jo is survived by her children, Martin V. Colwell of Malden,
Rose M. and her husband, Jack DiRuzza of Malden, and Frances M.
Colwell of Malden, her siblings, Betty Morrison of Minneapolis,
MN, Margaret MacKinnon of Sydney, Nova Scotia, Catherine Carideo
of Salem, MA, and Martin B. MacInnis of Towanda, PA, her
grandsons, Michael DiRuzza and his wife Nicole, of Quincy and
Brian DiRuzza and his wife, Lindsay, of Waltham, her
great-granddaughter, Alessandra DiRuzza of Quincy as well as
many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, Jo was preceded in death
by her siblings, Florence MacIntyre, Michael and John MacInnis.

Salem St. Malden on Monday, February 12, 2007 at 9:30 AM
followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in the Immaculate
Conception Church, 600 Pleasant St. Malden at 10:30 AM. Fr.
Chip Hines of the Immaculate Conception Parish will be
celebrating the Mass. Burial will immediately follow in Holy
Cross Cemetery, Malden.
Visitation
will be held in the funeral home on Sunday, February 11, 2007
from 4 to 8 PM.
