Robert Henry Cusson

 

     Robert H. Cusson, a lifelong resident of Malden, died on Wednesday, June 28, 2006 at the Soldiers’ Home in Chelsea, he was 77.  Born in Malden on June 23 1929, he was the son of George W. and Bertha (Wyman) Cusson.  After his completed high school, Bob joined the US Marine Corp. enlisting in Boston in August of 1946.  He served through the end of WWII and into Korea, where he fought courageously in several battles, and was eventually awarded the Purple Heart for his actions.  Upon his discharge in August of 1951, Bob had been awarded several other medals and had attained the rank of Corporal.

     When he returned home, Bob married his sweetheart, Marcella N. Blomerth on September 5, 1952 at the Centre United Methodist Church and settled in Malden.  The couple spent over 54 years in marriage together raising and caring for their family.   

     Bob worked at the Haynes Flute Company for a short time and then took employment with the Boston Naval Shipyard, where he worked for 11 years.  He then worked for the Malden Masonic Association before becoming the Maintenance supervisor of the Malden YMCA, where he was also a "Life Member".

     Bob was an active and dedicated member of the Centre United Methodist Church, now known as the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church.  He served in many aspects of the church, including acting as a Lay Speaker.  He was also active in the community, serving as both Cub Scout and Boy Scout Leader.  He was a Dad Advisor of Demolay, Malden.  He was also a member of the Mt. Vernon / Galilean Lodge of Malden for over 50 years, serving 25 of them as Tyler.  Bob also was a member of the Aleppo Temple Shrine, in Wilmington and a member of the North Shrine Club.  In addition, he was a member of the American Legion, the Amvets, Malden VFW Post 639, the DAV - Clifford Chapter, the Sons of Union Veterans Bond Chapter 104, and a member of the Tabernacle Royal Arch Chapter. 

     He is survived by his wife, Marcella N. Cusson of Malden, his sons, Paul S., Robert A., and Gary W. Cusson, all of CT, his daughter, Gayle E. Weirszchalek of Malden, his siblings, Walter Cusson of CA, Jennie M. Solesky of Melrose, and John Cusson of NH as well as eleven grandchildren, one great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Mark S. Cusson, and his siblings, Rodney and George Cusson, Alice Babb, and Ruth Chryst. 

Visitation will be held in the Weir~MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem Street, Malden, on Friday, June 30, 2006 from 4-8 PM.

     Funeral services will be in the funeral home on Saturday, July 1, 2006 at 10 AM.  Rev. Ruth R. Oduor, Pastor of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church will be officiating.  Burial will immediately follow in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody.

     In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bob’s memory may be made to the Chelsea Soldiers’ Home Recreation Department c/o John Davis 91 Crest Ave. Chelsea, MA 02150-2154.
