Silvio Joseph DeSimone

     Silvio J. “Salvi” DeSimone, 88, died Saturday morning, June 23, 2007 at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital in Melrose, he was 88. Born on December 2, 1918 the son of the late Pasquale & Carmella (Santomango) DeSimone. Silvio was born in Boston and raised and educated in  Malden.  In February of 1942, Silvio joined the U.S. Army and served with the Battery A 198th. Field Artillery, in the Southern Philippines and Ryukyusa and later stationed at  Pearl Harbor. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon with Bronze Service Arrowhead, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 2 Bronze Service Stars. Silvio was later discharged as a Staff Sergeant on December 12, 1945. Silvio returned home and would later meet and marry his sweet heart Rose Iovanella. The couple married in Boston in 1946 and settled in Malden, where they raised their three sons. Silvio and Rose had just celebrated sixty years of marriage on June 15, 2007.  Silvio worked as a union laborer with Local # 151 Laborers Union, Cambridge and had worked for many years with the Vappi Construction Co. of Cambridge.

     “Salvi”, as fondly known, loved playing cards with his buddies, along with being a pool shark. His vegetable garden was a passion of his and when time permitted he loved fishing.  First and foremost, his wife of sixty years Rose was the love of his life, they enjoyed numerous trips together. Two yearly rituals were to  roll in New Years Eve at the Ice Capades with his brothers and sister and their spouses and enjoy Chinese food afterwards.  “Papa” as loving referred to installed a pool in his back yard for his grandchildren to enjoy.  He loved having his family over for weekend BBQ’s and fun, be it a wiffle ball game or the big bocce tournament. The fourth of July was always the grandest show of fireworks that his late son Bobby displayed. “Salvi” had a  second love of his life Caesar, a 155lb rottweiler. Silvio was a member of the Malden American Legion, Malden VFW Post and the Italian Citizen Club of Malden.

     He is survived by his wife,  Rose M. (Iovanella) DeSimone, his son’s  Dennis DeSimone, and his wife Jean  of  Saugus,  Edward DeSimone and his wife Cathy of Malden, his daughter-in-law Jo-Ann DeSimone of Malden,  his brother, Antonio DeSimone of Medford, his cherished grandchildren,  Christopher,  Christina, Tammy,  Robert,  Stacey , Andrea , Edward  and his  ten great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son Robert DeSimone, his brother’s Angelo DeSimone, John DeSimone, Ernest DeSimone and his sister Catherine Memmolo.

 In lieu of flowers contributions in Silvio’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701-9376. 

     Silvio’s  funeral will be held from the Weir-Mac Cuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem St., Malden, on Tuesday ., June 26th. at  7:30 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in Sacred Hearts Church, 297 Main St.,  Malden, at 8:45 AM.  Interment to follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.
