John Patrick Gillen Sr.

John P. Gillen Sr., died Saturday morning, February 17, 2007 at The Meadows at
Edgewood in North Andover, MA. He was 89. Born on September 9, 1917 in the
Charlestown section of Boston, he was the son of the late Hugh & Sarah
(McGonagle) Gillen. John was educated in the Charlestown school system and was a
graduate with the Class of 1935. He later attended classes at the Boston
University.
On January 21, 1942 in Sacred Hearts Church, John married his sweetheart Grace
E. Montague and the couple settled in Malden. In April of 1942 John joined the
U.S. Army Air Force and was assigned with the Squadron “C” 2132D Army Air Force
as a Supply Technician. John saw action in Algeria French Morocco, Tunisia,
Sicily, Naples Foggia, Rome Arno and China. In August of 1945 John was discharged with
the rank of Staff Sergeant. When he returned home John and his wife Grace
would start a family, and raise their son and daughter. John worked for the U.S. Customs, Boston Office
as a Liquidator. In 1973 John retired from the U.S. Government with a total of
38 years service.
The couple moved to West Yarmouth after his retirement and would spend many
years there until Grace’s passing in November of 1992. John was a member
of the West Yarmouth Elks Club and was an avid gardener and enjoyed growing vegetables
and flowers in his spare time. He enjoyed woodcrafts and doing carpenter work
around the house and taking long walks out doors as well as bowling and
dancing.
John is survived by his daughter, Joan G. Boughan and her husband Edward A.
Boughan of Andover, and his daughter in-law Gertraud E. Gillen of S. Weymouth,
his grandson Mark P. Gillen of S. Weymouth and his sister Sarah Harrington of
Moultonboro, NH and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by
his wife Grace E. Montague) Gillen, his son Major John P. "Pat" Gillen, his
brother Hugh Gillen, and his sister Grace Powers.
Visitation will be held at the Weir~MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem
St., Malden, on Tuesday from 4-8 PM.

at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4-8 PM.

Funeral from the Weir ~Mac Cuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem St. Malden
on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2007 at 9:15 AM followed by a Mass of Christian burial
in the Immaculate Conception Church, 600 Pleasant St, Malden at 10:30AM.
Burial will be later in the day in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in
Bourne, MA at 1:45 PM.
