Ralph F. Greer Sr.
Ralph F.
Greer, 73, a lifelong resident of Malden, passed away Monday,
September 26, in the presence of his loving family. Ralph was
born and raised in Malden. Soon after high school, he enlisted
in the US Army where he was a sharpshooter. He served for 6
years in the Army and was then discharged into the National
Guard. While serving with the National Guard, he attended and
graduated from the Mass Military Academy. He was then promoted
to the rank of Captain. He continued to serve in the National
Guard until January of 1992, when he retired from the Army as a
Sgt Major with almost 40 years of dedicated service to our
country. When he returned from active duty in the 50's, he
began racing cars in the Peabody Racing Circuit, with what
became known as the "Greer Team". His brother, Matty, opened up
the Greer Garage on Lebanon Street which Ralph became part of
just a couple years later. In 1966, they reopened the garage on
Broadway as Maplewood Motors. Ralph ran the garage until his
retirement in 1997. In 1956, Ralph married his sweetheart,
Sheila A. Lally, and the two shared 49 wonderful years together
raising their 3 children. Ralph was an active member of the
Malden Lions Club, Chapter 33k, often participating with the Eye
mobile. He was also a two time past President and a past Lt.
Governor. He was a "Lifetime Member in Good Standing" of the
Malden Lions.
Mr. Greer had
also joined the Middlesex County Deputy Sheriffs office and
served as the treasurer of the Office. He also rode the "Blue
Knights," Mass Chapter 5, motorcycle team and participated in
the precision drills they performed both in the US and
Internationally.
He is survived
by his wife Sheila A. (Lally) Greer of Malden, his daughters,
Karen E. Greer-King and her husband Paul, of Melrose and Denise
M. Greer of CA, his son, Ralph F. Greer Jr. and his wife,
Theresa, of Peabody, his brothers, Alfred Jr. of Hooksett, NH,
George of Wolfeboro, NH, and Alvaro of Framingham, his sisters,
Theresa Whooley-Locke of Malden and Edith Smith of Malden, and
his grandchildren, Paul, Kyle, and Shayna.
He was
preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Edith (Costa)
Greer, his sister Alfreda Heath and his brother Mathew M.
Greer.
Funeral
services will be held from the Weir MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral
Home. 144 Salem St. Malden, on Friday, September 30, 2005 at
9A.M.followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Joseph’s
Church, at 10 AM. Rev. Richard T. Bakker of St. Joseph's
Church will be celebrating. Burial will be in the Forest Dale
Cemetery in Malden.
Visitation
will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, September 29, 2005
from 4 - 8 PM.
