James William Benton Sr.
James W. Benton Sr.,
died Thursday morning, September 6, 2007 in the Annemark Nursing &
Rehabilitation Center in Revere, after a long illness, he was 85. Born on
October 4, 1921 the son of the late Arthur & Mary (Gallant) Benton. Jim was
born in Chelsea and educated in Our Lady of Assumption School and later in the
Chelsea school system. He served in the US Navy during World War II, having
attained the rank of Seaman First Class. He enlisted on June 7, 1942 and was
discharged on June 22, 1946 in Boston. Mr. Benton was assigned to the Navy
Training Center in Newport, RI and later served on the USS Proyer, USS Oberon,
USS Susan B. Anthony, USS Almaack and the USS Prarie where he saw a lot of
action. After the war he was discharged and received the World War II Victory
Medal, the American Area Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Area Medal.
Jim
returned home and later married his sweetheart Elaine V. Aiken in St. Roses
Church in Chelsea in 1947. The couple remained in Chelsea and raised their
daughter and three sons. Mr. Benton worked for the Cambridge Post office for
the next 23 years and retired from government service in 1987. Jim and Elaine
had been residents of Malden for the last fifteen years. Jim was an avid Red Sox
fan and enjoyed golfing, fishing and bowling.
Jim
is survived by his loving wife, Elaine V. (Aiken) Benton of Malden, his
children, James W. Benton Jr. of Malden, Michael C. Benton of Swampscott,
Elaine V. Archdeacon of Bedford, NH and Steven R. Benton of Swanee, GA. He
was the loving brother of Helen Barnes and Arthur Benton both of Chelsea. He
was the cherished grandfather of ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by
his brothers, John and Robert Benton, and his sister Jean Gillis.
Funeral from the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem St., Malden,
on Monday, Sept. 10, 2007 at 9 AM followed by a Mass of Christian
Burial in St. Joseph’s Church, 770 Salem St., Malden at 10 AM. Burial will
immediately follow in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody.
Visitation will be held in the
Weir ~ Mac Cuish Golden Rule Funeral Home on Sunday Sept. 9, 2007
from 4-8 PM.
