Stanley "Stan" William Kaszanek, Jr.

Stanley "Stan" William Kaszanek, Jr., 58, a noted disabled advocate, former professor at Suffolk University, died, suddenly, Tuesday, June 18, 2002 at The Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Boston, MA.  Stan was born and educated in Chelsea and graduated from Boston College High School. He then went on to Boston College where he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree.  A life-long student of Marxism, he pursued graduate studies at Northeastern University. Stan's commitment to social change, led him to Mississippi in the early sixties where his activism in the civil rights movement saw him imprisoned and beaten but never defeated in his zeal for justice.  Honored later on as one of the original freedom riders, Stan’s commitment to civil rights continued throughout his life.

An impassioned educator, Mr. Kaszanek inspired students at Suffolk and Northeastern Universities. He would lecture, without notes, on Marxism, criminal justice and sociology. During this period, Stan fought alcoholism, though not before it had ravaged his health. His on-going fight with the disease inspired his work with the disabled. The City of Malden knew of no fiercer a defender of the rights of the disabled.

Stan was the Director of the Malden Disabilities Issues Committee, past president of Tri-City Community Action Program; co-host of Malden Public Radio, member of the ACLU, NRA, and a founding member of the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Mr. Kaszanek, Jr. lived in Malden, MA for forty -six years and was previously from Chelsea.

He is survived his Godmother, Helen C.  Jankowiak of Medford, and his Aunts,  Agnes M. Karnafel of Medford and Catherine Szymcak of Chelsea.

He was born September 14, 1943 in Chelsea, Massachusetts the son of the late Stanley and Maryann (Szymczak) Kaszanek, Jr.

Contributions in Stan’s memory may be made to the Joslin Diabetes Center, One Joslin Place, Boston MA 02215

Visitation will be held at the Weir-Mac Cuish  Funeral Home. 144 Salem Street, Malden on Friday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM.
