Obituary Notice

David Wynn Lyon Sr.

 

 

     David W. Lyon Sr., died Tuesday evening, March 27, 2007 at the Shaughnessy-Kaplan Rehab Hospital in Salem, MA, he was 80.  David was born in Los Angeles, CA on October 1, 1926; he was the son of the late Victor W. & Ada (Dow) Lyon.

     David was educated in a private school in Providence, RI and later was a graduate of the Admiral Billard Academy, a Naval Preparatory School in New London, CT.  He joined the U.S. Coast Guard on July 22, 1944, serving in the recruiting Station in Boston, Manhattan Beach, NY, and the Coast Guard Navel Academy. He later served on the Coast Guard Cutter Eagle and was considered one of the original crew members, when it first sailed out of Germany.  David was discharged in July of 1946 and had attained the rank of Seaman First Class.  David had received the American Campaign Medal & World War II Victory Medal Ribbon.

      On July 4, 1990, David was cordially invited by the Commander of the First Coast Guard District, Commander of the Coast Guard Group Boston, and the Commanding Officer of the USCGC Eagle to join them onboard the USCGC Eagle during the annual turnaround of the USS Constitution on July 4, 1990. This event was something that David was very proud of and thoroughly enjoyed. David and his wife Mae had been married for the last fifty-six years, living mostly in Malden. David was a longtime time member of the First Church in Malden Congregational. Mr. Lyon later worked as a merchant marine for the ESSO Gas Company working out of Connecticut, delivering fuel to different ports. He later was a supervisor with the Boston University Library Security for many years, until his retirement.  

      Mr. Lyon was a member of the Mt. Vernon Lodge AF & AM, Malden, and former treasure of the Malden Chapter of Demolay, former director of the Malden Northern Little League and a member of the Malden American Legion. He ran the Wednesday Night bowling league at the Charles St. Alleys for over twenty years. He was an avid Boston Red Sox and Boston Sport fan.

      He is survived by his wife, Mae D. (Deveau) Lyon of Malden, his son, David W. Lyon Jr. of Malden, his daughter, Dianne M. Viana of Revere, and seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

      He was preceded in death by his sister Stella Ferguson and his brother Chester A. Moody.

      Visitation will be held at Weir MacCuish Funeral Home, 144 Salem St. Malden on Friday, March 30th 2-4 & 7-9.

      Funeral services will be held at the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem St., Malden, on Saturday, March 31st at 11AM. The Rev. Randell Ferrara of the First Church in Malden Congregational will be officiating.  Burial will be in the Puritan Lawn Memorial Park in Peabody.
