Anthony
Joseph LaVerde Sr.,
83, a retired letter carrier, died on
Monday, September 25, 2000 at his home in Medford, MA,
after a brief
illness. He was born in Everett, MA and after completing
school he served in the U.S.
Army during World War II having attained the rank of Tec 4.
He enlisted on January 13, 1941 in Somerville, MA and
was discharged
on February 22, 1944 in Topeka,
KS. He participated
in the Battle of Guadalcanal from Dec. 1942- Feb. 1943. He received the American Defense Service Ribbon and the
Asiatic – Pacific Theater Ribbon. He was also a disabled
American Veteran. When he was discharged he became a postal
carrier in Medford and always had dog treats for all the dogs on
his route and lollipops
for the children. He loved to paint different signs that were
needed at the post office and play the musical saw with either a
bow or a piece of wood. He
was a member of the Saugus VFW Post # 2346 and the Winchester
Knights of Columbus Council # 210. Mr. LaVerde had been working at
Johnny’s Food Master in Medford,
for the last 5
years until his illness. He was also a member of the Postal Union.
Mr.
LaVerde has resided in Medford, MA for the last 17 years after
spending five years of his retirement in
Eliot, ME, where
he had moved after spending 37
years in Malden.
He
is survived by his wife Rose M. (Verrengia) LaVerde of Medford his
daughter, Rosanne M.
and her husband Joseph
Denaro of Bedford, Patricia
Goen (Former daughter-in-law), Gennaro LaVerde (Brother) of
Medford, Margaret Neff (Sister)
of Everett, Eleanor Bazylinski (Sister) of Melrose, and the late
Guy and Frank LaVerde (Brothers), Josephine Gaskill, Mildred Leggiero,
Marion Manzi (Sisters). Also survived by
Carleen R.
West (Granddaughter) of Bedford, MA, Kelly M. Stewart
(Granddaughter) of Wakefield, MA, Anthony J. LaVerde
III (Grandson) of Everett, MA and Rene' M. LaVerde
(Granddaughter) of Portsmouth,
NH. Also survived by 5 great-grandchildren.
He
was preceded in death by his son Anthony J. LaVerde Jr.
He
was born December 28, 1916 in Everett, MA
the son of the late Gennaro and Josephine (Colella) LaVerde.
In
lieu of flowers contributions in his memory maybe made to the

memorial service will be held on Friday Sept. 29th.
at 11:00 A.M. at the Weir-
MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem St., Malden, MA . Fr.
Paris of St. Peter's
Church in Malden will
be the celebratant.
