Louise
Edith Murphy

Louise E. Murphy, 89, of Melrose, died Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at
her home. Born on December 30, 1918 in Everett, she was the
daughter of the late Ernest L. and A. Elizabeth (Granat)
Haskell. Louise was raised and educated in Everett. She was a
graduate of Everett High School with the Class of 1936. She met
her sweetheart, Joseph D. Murphy, while roller skating at a
roller rink in Revere. Joseph and Louise were married on August
22, 1942. They briefly lived in Brighton before moving back to
Everett in 1945 to raise their family. In 1966, Joe and Louise
moved to Melrose where they finally settled. The couple spent
33 years in their Melrose home, 56 years together in marriage,
until Joseph’s passing on July 25, 1999. Out of high school,
Louise worked at John Hancock Insurance Co. in Boston until she
was forced to stop working because of motherhood. In 1949,
after her daughters were a little older, Louise went to work for
E.B. Horn & Co. Jewelry Store, located at Downtown Crossing in
Boston. She was the Inventory Control Manager for the company
and was in charge of the store's diamond inventory. She worked
for over 40 years until her retirement in December of 1989.
Louise was a life-long member of the VASA Order of America, a
Swedish lodge. She was also a long-time member of Melrose
Chapter Order of the Eastern Star as well as the Daughters of
the Nile of Wakefield. Louise enjoyed reading and spending time
at the beach. She also spent time rug hooking and made various
area rugs. She was also a big Boston Bruins fan and had season
tickets back in the days of the “Big Bad Bruins” of the late
1960’s and early 1970’s. Louise also was an avid Red Sox fan.
Through all of her years of working and various organizational
involvements, Louise's greatest passion and enjoyment was
spending time with her daughters and grandchildren.
Louise is survived by her daughters, Jean E. Raymond of
Wakefield and Phyllis L. Murphy of Melrose, her grandchildren,
John Raymond and his wife Tina of Beverly, David Raymond and his
wife Robin of Saugus, and Amy Raymond of Reading, and her
