Rita Marie Overlan

     Rita M. (Hardy) Overlan, of Malden, died Thursday, October 25, 2007 at the Sawtelle Family Hospice House in Reading. She was 89.  Born on May 16, 1918 in South Boston, she was the daughter of the late John and Nellie (Hodnett) Hardy.  Rita was raised and educated in South Boston.  She graduated from The Girl’s High School in the South End with the Class of 1935.  After high school, Rita went to work as a legal secretary.  She worked for over 70 years for many of the major law firms in Boston until she retired in 2005.  Rita married Lawrence A. Overlan in St. Monica’s Church in South Boston in 1939.  The couple were married for 26 years, raising and caring for their family until Lawrence’s passing in May of 1965.  In addition to her busy work schedule, Rita also managed to find time to volunteer tutoring children at the Boy’s and Girl’s Club in Charlestown and Chelsea. She also worked with the Doric Dames conducting tours at the Massachusetts State House. Rita had lived in Malden for the past twelve years and was previously from Revere.

     Rita is survived by her sons, Kerry L. Overlan and his wife, Helen of Melrose, Lawrence A. Overlan and his wife, Sheryl of Canton, and Kevin B. Overlan and his wife, Deborah of North Reading, her brother, Jack Hardy and his wife, Elaine Hardy of Derry, NH and Revere.  Her grandchildren Michael, Matthew, John, Mary, Elisabeth, Alex, Margaret, and Brian, six great-grandchildren, and her nephew Stephen Hardy and her niece Susan Westhaver survive her.

In addition to her husband and parents, Rita was preceded in death by her daughter, Sheila L. Overlan.

     Funeral from the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem Street, Malden on Monday, October 29, 2007 at 9 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary’s Church, 660 Washington Street, Revere at 10 AM.  Fr. Paul J. Aveni, Jr., Pastor of St. Mary’s Church will be celebrating the Mass.  Interment will be held privately.

Visitation will be held in the funeral home on Sunday, October 28, 2007 from 1 to 5 PM.
