Walter Irving Peabody Jr.


Walter I. Peabody, Jr., died Tuesday afternoon, May 8, 2007 at
the Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston, he was 74. Born on
June 29, 1932 the son of the late Walter & Bertha
(Gordon) Peabody. Walter was born in Everett and educated in
the Everett school system. After his schooling Walter enlisted
in the U.S. Army on July 6, 1949 and was later stationed in
Austria for the next three years with Company C 1st Battalion
350th Infantry Regiment. Walter received the Army
Occupation Medal with the Germany Clasp and the Sharpshooter
Badge. Walter was later discharged on August 22, 1952 as a
Private First Class.
When Walter
returned home, he started working as a truck driver, in the
trucking industry. He was a member of Teamster Local # 25 of
Charlestown and served as a shop steward for many years, with
different companies. He was last employed with the St. Johnsbury
Trucking for four years and retired in 1990.
On June 17,
1967 Walter would marry his sweetheart Mary S. Tagliente in the
First Parish in Malden Universalist Church. The couple
honeymooned in Canada and settled in Malden. Walter had been a
resident of Malden for the last 45 years.
Mr. Peabody
was an avid pool player and would play most afternoons at the
club; he also loved a good fishing trip and even taught Mary to
fish. He was a member of the Malden VFW # 639 and a very active
member of Malden American Legion Post #69. Along with his wife
Mary, the couple was active running or helping out with
different functions. Each year they enjoyed preparing the club
with Christmas decorations for the holidays and the Christmas
and New Years parties. Walter served on the Governors Board of
the club for many years.
He is survived
by his loving wife Mary S. Peabody of Malden, and his devoted
sister Claire Huntoon of Malden.
He was
preceded in death by his brother-in-law Charles Huntoon.
Funeral
services will be held on Friday, May 11, 2007 at 10:00 A.M. in
the Weir- MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem St.,
Malden. The Rev. David M. Horst of The First Parish in Malden,
Universalist will be officiating. Burial will be in the Forest
Dale Cemetery in Malden.
