Alfred Joseph Roy
Alfred J. Roy of Peabody, MA died Wednesday, April 5, 2006 at the Beverly
Hospital in Beverly, MA, he was 85. Born on August 1, 1920 in Salem, MA, he was
the son of the late Philippe and Marie A. (Paradise) Roy. After Al had
gradated from St. Joseph’s Academy in Salem, MA, he joined the U.S. Coast
Guard. Al enlisted into the service on September 27, 1939 when he was only
nineteen and fought for his country during World War II. He served for more
than twenty years until he was discharged on June 30, 1960 in St. Louis, MO. At
the time he was discharged, he had attained the rank of Chief Boatswain’s
Mate/Chief Petty Officer. After Al had served his duty, he continued to work on
the ocean. He worked for 10 years on the research ship Atlantis investigating
off the coast of Wood’s Hole, RI. Upon completing his time there, Al joined the
Merchant Marines. He patrolled up and down the Mississippi River on fuel
barges. Al was an avid sports fan, rooting for the Red Sox and faithfully
following the Patriots.
He is
survived by his long-time companion and friend, Alene Hartigan of Peabody, his
brother, Leonard Roy and his wife, Marie of CA, as well as many nieces and
nephews.
He was preceded in death by
his sister Louise Root and his brother Robert Roy.
Visitation will be held at the
Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 12, 2006 from 9 to 10
AM.
A graveside service will
follow in the VA Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA at 11:30 AM.
In lieu of flowers,
contributions in Al’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30
Speen St. Framingham, MA 01701-9376.
