Walter Moore Russ


Walter M. Russ died Friday morning, August 17th. , 2007 at the
Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, he was 90. Born on July 4, 1917 the son of the late
Andrew and Ida (Moore) Russ. Walter was born in Fort Plain, NY and educated in
Fort Plain school system and later graduated from the Albany State College in
New York.
Walter served with the U.S. Army during WW II and after the war was
transferred to the Army Reserve National Guard of Massachusetts in Melrose, MA.
He continued to serve his country for the next 34 years until his retirement in
July 3, 1977. Walter worked as a coke maker for the former Eastern Gas & Fuel
Company in Charlestown for 25 years until their closing. Mr. Russ was a very
active member and secretary of the former Moose Club of Everett and later joined
the Revere Moose were he was active with the bingo nights. He was an active and
longtime member of the Palestine Lodge AF & AM of Everett and a member of the
Aleppo Temple Shriner’s of Wilmington. Mr. Russ had lived in Malden for the last
35 years and was previously from Everett, and Fort Plain, NY.
In
his spare time, Walter enjoyed bowling with the Malden Senior League as well as
watching bowling on Saturdays mornings. He loved to read a good mystery novel,
and also enjoyed hooking rugs which were later given to family and friends as
well as displayed throughout Walter and Adeline’s home. He was an avid sports
fan and enjoyed baseball and football.
He is
survived by fiancée Adeline E. Higgins of Malden, his former wife Beverly W.
Russ of Winthrop, his son, Jerome G. Russ and his wife Rosemarie of Winthrop,
his daughter Beverly A. Hart and her husband John Hart of Lynn. He was the
cherished grandfather of seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He
was preceded in death by his wives, Clara Russ and Mary Russ, his father Andrew
Russ, and his mother Ida Moore, his sisters Evelyn Armitag, Florence Loring,
Louise Earnhardt, Dorothy Schrell and Emily Russ.
Visitation will be held at the Weir~MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem
St., Malden, on Monday, from 5-9 PM. A Masonic service with the Palestine
Lodge AF & AM will be held at 8 PM.
Walter’s funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 21, 2007 at 11:00 A.M.
in the Weir~Mac Cuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem St., Malden with the
Rev. Elizabeth Killeen of the First Baptist Church, Revere officiating.
Interment will follow in the Puritan Lawn Memorial Park in Peabody.
