Harold William Sparrow Jr.

    

     Harold W. Sparrow, Jr. died Thursday, November 30, 2006, he was 79.  Born on September 12, 1927 in Malden, he was the son of the late Harold W. Sparrow, Sr. and Mildred F. (Rich) Sparrow. Harold was raised and educated in Malden and grew up in the Suffolk Square neighborhood.  While in high school, he was an accomplished athlete who had set a Massachusetts State record for the high jump.  Like many young men of his day, Harold left school early to enlist in the service and help our country fight during WWII.  He enlisted into the US Navy on July 9, 1945 and then was discharged on August, 9, 1946.  When he returned home from the war, Harold resumed his education and eventually graduated from Malden High School with the Class of 1948.   After school, Harold reenlisted into the US Navy on January 29, 1951 to once again help fight during the Korean War.  By the time he was discharged on November 26, 1952 in Washington, DC, Harold had attained the rank of YNT-3.  In 1951, he was the first African-American to join the Malden Police Department and he worked for them for well over a decade, until he joined the MDC Police.  Harold was a detective and a member of the MDC first SCUBA underwater recovery team.  He retired from the MDC on June 30, 1976.  Harold was a member of the BPOE Elks Lodge of Everett, the Malden VFW Post #639, and a member of the Massachusetts Police Association.  Harold enjoyed sports, especially baseball and also had a talent for cooking as well as a love for boating, most of all he cherished the time he was able to share with friends and family. 

     He is survived by his children, Harold W. Sparrow, III of Hyde Park, Valencia Sparrow of Brookline, Andrea Louis of Beverly, and Barbara Hillman of Dorchester, and a number of grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Loney Sparrow Sr. and Frederick Sparrow.

     Visitation will be held in the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem St. Malden on Monday, December, 4, 2006 from 6 to 7:30 PM.  A funeral service will immediately follow in the funeral home at 7:30 PM.  Bishop Gilbert A. Thompson of the Jubilee Christian Church will be officiating.  Burial in the Forest Dale Cemetery, Malden will take place on Tuesday, December 5, 2006 at 1 PM.   Family and friends are invited to gather at the funeral home at 12:30 PM prior to the graveside service.
