John Edward
Staples

John E. Staples, of Methuen, formerly of Woburn, died Monday,
November 12, 2007 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers,
he was 54. Born on February 1, 1953 in Malden, he was the son
of the late Egerton and Marjorie (Gardener) Staples. John was
raised and educated in Chelsea. He was a graduate of Chelsea
High School and had attended a year at Salem State College
before he entered into the U.S. Coast Guard to help fight for
our country during Vietnam. John enlisted on February 12, 1973
in Boston, and served for over two years until he was honorably
discharged on October 24, 1975 in Terminal Island, CA. John had
attained the rank of Seaman Recruit and was awarded with the
Antarctic Service Medal as well as the Navy Meritorious Unit
Commendation Ribbon. John spent many years after his war
service as a Merchant Marine. He served on over 21 ships during
his time served. John went to work for Southwick Clothing Co.
as a stationary fireman. He was in charge of watching and
maintaining the factory’s boilers. John married his sweetheart,
Maria V. Jover, on August 1, 1990 in the Philippines. After
their marriage, John and Maria moved to Woburn to raise their
family. They lived there until 2000 when they moved to Methuen
to be closer to John’s work. John was a current member of the
American Legion, Post 0122, in Methuen.
John is survived by his wife, Maria V. Staples of Methuen, his
sons, Ben, David, James, and Raymond Staples, all of Methuen,
his siblings, Barbara Staples of Medford, Donald Staples of
Malden, and Richard Staples of Wakefield, and his nieces and
nephews, Allyson, Richard, and Justin.
In addition to
his parents, John was preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth
Staples.
Funeral from the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144
Salem Street, Malden on Friday, November 16, 2007 at 9 AM
followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Luke's Episcopal
Church, 201 Washington Avenue, Chelsea at 10 AM. Fr. Edgar
Gutierrez will be celebrating the Mass. Interment will be held
on Monday, November 19, 2007 at 1 PM in the Woodlawn Cemetery,
Everett.
Visitation
will be held in the funeral home on Thursday, November 15, 2007
from 4 to 8 PM.
