Marjorie Gardener Staples

     Marjorie G. (Gardener) Staples of Wakefield died Tuesday, April 10, 2007 at the Whidden Memorial Hospital in Everett, she was 84.  Born on January 18, 1923 in Melrose, she was the daughter of the late Edward E. and Beatrice (Brown) Gardener.  Marjorie was raised and educated in Malden.  Upon graduating from Malden High School, Marjorie enrolled in the Melrose Hospital School of Nursing to become a registered nurse.  After completing her nursing training, Marjorie enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in the Philippines during World War II.   When she returned home, she married her sweetheart, Egerton E. Staples, on January 31, 1946.  The couple settled in Chelsea to raise their family.  Marjorie and Egerton spent over 51 years of marriage together, raising and caring for their family until Egerton’s passing in February of 1997.  Marjorie went to work at the Whidden Hospital as a registered nurse in 1960.  She worked for over 24 years until her retirement in 1984.  Marjorie was an active member of the Wakefield Senior Center.  She enjoyed the people and games they offered at the center, especially BINGO.  She was also an active member of the Clark Fellowship, an association of the First Baptist Church in Malden.  Marjorie had lived in Wakefield for the past 35 years and was previously from Chelsea. 

     Marjorie is survived by her children, Barbara Staples and her husband Stephen Gay of Medford, John Staples and his wife, Maravic of Methuen, Donald Staples of Malden, and Richard Staples of Wakefield, and her grandchildren, Allyson Gay, and Richard, Justin, Benjo, David, James, and Raymond Staples.

In addition to her husband and parents, Marjorie was preceded in death by her son Kenneth Staples and her sister Dorothy Beckwith.

     A memorial service will be held in the First Baptist Church, 493 Main St. Malden on Friday, April 13, 2007 at 11 AM.  Rev. Martha A. Dominy of the First Baptist Church will be officiating.  Burial will immediately follow in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.

Visitation will be held in the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem St. Malden on Thursday, April 12, 2007 from 4 to 8 PM.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Marjorie’s memory may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St. Framingham, MA 01701.
