Francis Enos Surette

Francis Enos Surette, “Fenway Frank” 75, died Friday, February 28, 2003 at the Winchester Hospital in Winchester, MA. after a lengthy illness.  Francis was born and educated in Malden and while at Malden High School was active in the Green Room Drama Club. When he completed school he entered the Merchant Marines and served on troop transport ships and medical evacuation ships during W.W.II out of Sheep's Head Bay, NY as a pharmacists mate third class. When he left the Merchant Marines at the end of the war he returned to Malden and went to work for Faulkner Manufacturing Co of Malden as a cutter for automotive upholstery fabrics, where he met his wife Florence. After his marriage he went to work for VATCO Seat Covers of Boston as a foreman and upholsterer. While working for VATCO, which was located next to the Red Sox parking lot on Brookline Ave he also operated a parking lot during Red Sox games. He became friendly with the grounds crew at Fenway and the head groundskeeper, Joe Mooney, Then on opening day  in  April of 1982 when Boston had a big snow storm he made it possible for the Red Sox to truck the snow out of Fenway Park through his lot to dispose of the snow on his property saving the opening day festivities. He was employed at VATCO for over twenty -eight years. When he retired from VATCO in 1978 he opened his own auto upholstery shop, Fenway Car Care Center. During the twenty years he operated this business he became well known in the greater Boston area for his restoration work on the interior of antique vehicles and retired in 1989. He was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Malden.  Mr. Surette was a life long resident of Malden, MA.

He is survived by his wife Florence M. (Pratt) Surette  of Malden, his son Paul F. Surette of New Mexico, his son, Joseph  P. Surette of Peabody, his son, James B. Surette  of Malden, his daughter, Cheryl L. A. Ruane of Tyngsboro, his son, Michael P. Surette of Melrose, his son, Scott E. Surette  of Wakefield, his son, Mark   E. Surette of PA, his sister, V. Mae  Santomango of Saugus, his brother, P. Lester Surette of Saugus, his brother, Joseph M.. Surette of Malden, his sister, Phyllis A. Buckley  of Malden, and fifteen grandchildren..

He was preceded in death by his sister Marceline M.J. Henderson, and his brother Edmund L. Surette.

He was born October 19, 1927 in Malden, MA the son of the late Enos and Louise (Muise) Surette.  He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II.   

Visitation will be held at Weir MacCuish Funeral Home, 144 Salem Street, Malden  on Monday from 4-8 PM.

Contribution’s in Frank’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701-9376

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday,  March 4th at 10:30 in St. Joseph’s Church, 770 Salem Street, Malden with the Rev. William J. Minigan, Pastor of St. Joseph's Church officiating.  Burial will be in the Puritan Lawn  Memorial Park in Peabody.
