Kenneth Roy Toothaker

Kenneth R. Toothaker, of Malden, passed on peacefully with his family at his side on Sunday afternoon, June 1, 2008 in Melrose Wakefield Hospital, he was 78.  Ken was born in Melrose on October 9, 1929 and was the son of the late George R. Toothaker Sr. and Eunice Doucette. He was educated in the Malden Schools and was a graduate of Malden High School, Class of 1948. After high school he worked in his dad’s service station.

In 1951 Ken joined the US Army and served during the Korean Conflict. He served with the 112th. Infantry Regiment over seas in Germany for 16 months. While in Germany he had a chance to try skiing for the first time. Something he loved to do in his younger years when he returned home. Ken was later discharged in March of 1953 as a Sergeant and received the Army Occupation Medal (Germany).

When Ken got home he returned to his job at the station and started working for his father and with his brother Bob at Ray’s Shell Station on Lebanon St., Malden  a family business, later to be known as Toothaker Auto Service. After the passing of their father, both Bob and Ken became co-owners and ran the business for a total of fifty years.  Ken mostly ran the front part of the business, doing the accounting, cash register and tended the gas pumps and caring for the  customers,  while his brother Bob did most of the major mechanic work. The business was later sold after the passing of  Bob Toothaker in November of 1994.  Ken was also on the Board of Trustee of  the Forest Dale Cemetery for twelve years. Ken enjoyed the company of his entire family and following the Boston Red Sox.  He was known as the brother that kept everyone else in line and always enjoyed himself at family outings. He was fondly called the “Mayor of Maplewood”. He loved to collect old antique clocks, and kept a large antique grandfather clock at his house. Ken could be seen daily at Fran’s Restaurant, on Lebanon St. Malden getting breakfast or lunch and socializing with all the patrons.

He is survived by his brother’s George Toothaker of Wakefield, Donald I. Toothaker of  Kennebunk, ME and his wife Jeannette. He was the cherished uncle of   many nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews. Ken was a close friend and neighbor of William Thompson of Malden.

He was preceded in death by his brother Robert A. Toothaker and his sister-in-law Pauline Toothaker.
