Vera R. Whelan
Vera R. (Groves)
Whelan, 75, died Sunday morning, August 21, 2005 at the Melrose-Wakefield
Hospital in Melrose after a short illness. Born in Malden on August 5, 1930,
she was the daughter of the late Donald M. & Annie I . Groves. Vera was a
graduate of Malden High School Class of 1948. After high school Vera worked for
the John Hancock Insurance Co. in Boston for five years as a file clerk. She
married her husband John B. Whelan on August 25, 1951 in the Center Methodist
Church and the couple stayed in Malden and later raised their two boys. The
couple would spend the next fifty-four years together. In Vera’s spare time
she enjoyed making crafts and was considered a great seamstress.
Vera is survived by her
husband Retired Malden Firefighter John B. Whelan of Malden, Her son’s David
J. Whelan of Winthrop, Douglas E. Whelan of SC, her cousin Annie Jacobs of
Arlington and her brother Clayton Groves of Melrose, her cherished
grandchildren, David J. Whelan Jr., Jason Whelan, Jamie Whelan and Shannon
Whelan all of Malden.
She was preceded in death by
her father Donald M. Groves, her mother Annie I. Groves, her sister Dorothy
Antosh, her brother’s Eric Groves, Alexander Groves, and her sister Marguerite
Glennon.
Visitation will be held at
Weir –MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem St. Malden, on Tuesday,
August 23, 2005 from 4-8 PM.
Funeral service will be held
on Wednesday, August 24, 2005 at 10:30 A.M. at the Weir~Mac Cuish Funeral Home.
The Rev. Paul C. Mc Pheeters of Forestdale Community Church will be
officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Dale Cemetery in Malden.
