William Robert Walsh

Bill & "The
Pony"
William R. Walsh, died suddenly Tuesday morning, December 11, 2007 at his home
in Malden, he was 80. Born in Medford on June 4, 1927, he was the son of the
late Nicholas and Dorothy (Moran) Walsh. Bill was born and raised in Medford
and summered on Staten Island, NY. He was educated in Malden schools and was
a graduate of Boys Catholic High School in Malden with the Class of 1941.
Bill
joined the Navy right out of high school and served his country during WW II.
He served in the South Pacific Champaign, in the Philippine
Islands. After the war,
Bill worked at the Charlestown Navy Yard with the heavy construction equipment.
He was a equipment oiler and work there until 1957. He was a member of Boston
Local # 4 Heavy Equipment Operators.
On
October 27, 1957 Bill joined the Malden Fire Department and served the city
for 34 years. He was a proud fire fighter and happily stated that he served in
every station house in the city. In his later years he was assigned to Malden
Ladder 1 and his last years with the Malden Fire Alarm until his retirement in
1992. He belonged to the Middlesex Fire Wardens where he attended many meeting.
. He was also a member of the Malden VFW Post # 639 and Malden American Legion

After
the tragic loss of 9/11 in New York City he traveled down with a group of his
fellow fire fighters to show support at the many fire fighter funerals. Along
with other comrades he participated in their services and would later go down
three other times to help fill the Stream of Blue. Sometimes serving on four
funerals a day. He was saddened to see all the different pictures of lost
comrades in the different fire houses. He would sometimes stay in the city for
days showing his support. He also had to go down to ground zero and see things
for himself. He even traveled to Worcester when they too lost six of their
brothers. He wanted to show his support and help fill the Stream of Blue. He
was a dedicated fire fighter and always called it a noble profession. Bill was
a very patriotic man and would always be there at the annual Malden Memorial Day
and Veterans Day Parades.
In
his spare time, he enjoyed his pride and joy working on his 1967 Ford Mustang
“The Pony”. Bill and his daughter Debbie would often attend local Mustang
Car shows and park in the field of ponies. He also loved listening to his
scanner and keeping up with the action in the city’s fire and police departments.
He is survived by his
daughter, Deborah Walsh of Malden.
He was preceded in death by
his wife Mary R. (Mahoney) Walsh.
Visitation
will be held in the Weir - MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem St.,
Malden on Friday, December 14, 2007 from 11 AM to 12 noon, followed by a funeral
service starting at 12 noon. Interment to follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden.
