John F. “Frank” Wortman
 
John F. “Frank” Wortman of Malden died peacefully, at his home on Saturday,
January 13, 2007, he was 88. Born on October 3, 1918 in Somerville, he was the
son of the late Frederick and Helen (McCarthy) Wortman. Frank was raised
and educated in the Everett schools. After school, Frank went off to the
Civilian Conservation Corps in Vermont before he entered into the U.S. Army to
help fight for his country during World War II. Before he went off to
active duty, Frank married his sweetheart, Dorothy (Bickerstaff) on September
28, 1941. The couple spent over 44 years in marriage together, raising and
caring for their family. Frank began his military service on October, 2
1944 and was discharged on January 10, 1946. At the time Frank was
honorably discharged from active duty, he had attained the rank of Private,
First Class and was awarded the Bronze Star. The Army helped put Frank
through engineering school. Upon his certificate completion at the
Peterson School in Boston, he began working for the New York, New Haven, &
Hartford Railroad Co. By the time he retired, Frank was working as a
stationary engineer. Frank then went to work for the Holmes School in
Malden as a custodian as well as Malden Catholic High School. John was
honored to be a member of the “men’s lunch table” at the Malden Senior Center, a
golden member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Aerie 893, and a member of
the Malden VFW, Post #639. Frank had lived in Malden for the past 58 years
and was previously from Everett.
Frank is survived by his children Sharon and her husband, Robert Shannon and
Eleanor and her husband, Dana Cushing, all of Malden, and Douglas Wortman and
his wife, Lana of Salem, NH, his 8 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, his
grand-dog Zoe, and his sister-in-laws, Barbara Horsman of Malden and Elsie
Wortman of NH. Frank also leaves many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and
great-nephews, and grand nieces and grand-nephews.
In addition to his wife and
parents, Frank was preceded in death by his brothers, Charlie and "Red" Wortman.
A funeral service will be held in the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home,
144 Salem St. Malden on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 at 11AM. Fr. Chip Hines of
Immaculate Conception Church will be the celebrant. Burial will
immediately follow in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody. Visitation will
be held in the funeral home on Tuesday, January 16, 2007 from 4 to 8 PM. In lieu
of flowers, contributions in John’s memory may be made to the Malden Senior
Citizens Center, 200 Pleasant St. Malden, MA 02148.
