Joan  G. (Carter) Callahan

Joan Georgine (Carter) Callahan, 78, a community activist, died Monday, December 8, 2008 at the Maristhill Nursing Home in Waltham, MA.  Joan was raised in Waltham, graduating from St. Mary's in 1948.  She then attended Boston College where she had earned her Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences and in Social Work.  She later attended Lesley College where she received her Masters Degree in Early Childhood, Special Education and Administration.  After college, she joined a convent and relocated to Cleveland. It was there she met and fell in love with Lawrence Callahan.  She left the order and returned to the Boston area to marry Lawrence.  In 1967, after spending a short time in Boston, the two moved to Malden.  They were able to buy their own home in 1969 where they raised their family.  They shared many years together until Lawrence’s untimely passing in 1977.

During the 1970's, Joan owned and operated Community Child Care.  She operated the day care center for many years.  She later became a writer for the Malden Advocate.   Joan was also a member of the Maplewood Neighborhood Association, and had been actively trying to preserve the community.  She served as President of the organization, and fought for the rights of the Malden citizens on many social and health related issues.  She was successful working to change the blasting regulations and helping to stop unwanted overdevelopment, including fighting the proposed asphalt plant.   Joan was also a long time dedicated member of St. Josephs Parish, where she never missed the daily Mass. Joan had also served on various boards of directors for many organizations including the St. Mary’s School in Melrose, Tri-City council for Children, and the League of Women Voters.  Throughout her life with all her community activism, what brought her the greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren, especially her grandson Eric.

She is survived by her sons, John J.P. Callahan of NH, Colin X.J. Callahan and wife Catherine of TN, her daughter, Shavaun M.T. Callahan of Malden, her brother, Spencer George and wife Sandra of Lexington, her grandchildren Alexandra, Riley, Gabriel, and Eric, as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Lawrence G. Callahan, her parents, Michael and Teresa (Cuddigan) Carter, and her son, Michael C. Callahan.
