Alice Anne Chapman

Alice A. (McManus) Chapman, died Monday morning, August 17, 2009 at Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers after a long illness, she was  87.  Alice was born, raised and educated in East Boston. She was the daughter of the late Thomas J. & Alice (Daniels) McManus.

Alice was a woman who loved God, from the time she was a little girl. She would sing to the Lord at all Masses and churches from her heart to glorify the Lord with her voice.

Now she’s singing in the kingdom of glory with her mother, her sisters, & brothers. We who loved her know the love she gave. Every time the kids needed advice, she would always be there and tell them to go to church and learn about the Lord. We who loved her will always know that she is still alive and well, singing to our Lord at home in heaven.    Amen.

In June of 1943, Alice joined the U.S. Navy to do her part in the war effort.  She was stationed in New York with the Fleet Postal Concentration Center 14th Naval District and with the Communications Center, 14th Naval District.  She also served in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.  She received the American Theater Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Medal and WW II Victory Metal.  Alice was discharged in April of 1946 as a Yeoman 2nd Class.

Alice would later meet her true love, Edward J. Chapman Jr. at Coney Island in New York.  Alice & Edward later married and settled in Malden were they raised their five sons. During this time when her children were growing the family shared many good times playing on the family piano, whether it was her father-in-law, husband, or son playing the piano.  Alice loved to sing and was considered a soprano singer.  For over thirty-five years, Alice’s passion for singing as well as her longtime church membership with the choir at the Tremont Temple Baptist Church of Boston never wavered.  She thoroughly enjoyed the time spent with all of the churches’ members.  In her spare time, she enjoyed working in her garden and tending to her many rose bushes.  Mrs. Chapman had lived in Malden for over 35 years. In June of 1990, her husband Edward passed away.  Alice’s one request was to sing one of the songs at her husband’s funeral that morning.

She is survived by sons, David J. Chapman, Thomas J. Chapman, Gerard F. Chapman, and P. Kevin Chapman, all of Malden.

She was preceded in death by her husband Edward J. Chapman Jr., her son, Michael E. Chapman, her brothers, Frank & John Sheehan, her sisters, Mary & Agnes Sheehan.

Visitation will be held at the Weir-Mac Cuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem St. Malden, on Wednesday, August 19, 2009   from   2-4 & 7-9
