Elaine Corbett
Jacqueline E. Corbett, of Malden, formerly of Melrose, died
Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at her home in Malden, she was 82. Born
on September 18, 1927 in Wakefield, she was the daughter of the
late Arthur E. Harding, Sr. and Gladys (Hoag) Harding. Jackie
was raised and educated in Wakefield. In February, 1957, she
married Alexander Corbett after the two had met while working at
Sears in Boston. The couple settled in Wakefield to raise and
care for their family. Jackie worked for many years in retail
as a salesperson and worked for many companies. In addition to
Sears, she worked for Jordan Marsh, Stearns, Woolworth, and at
the end of her career, Bradlees where she retired from in 1992.
Jackie was an active member of her community and church. She
was a member of the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in
Malden. She also served on the Massachusetts State Board of
United Methodist Women and was active in Church Women United.
She was extremely involved in politics as well as unions. She
was active in the state and local Democratic Party and the Mass.
Senior Action Coalition and served as the union shop steward for
Bradlees in Medford in the United Food and Commercial Workers,
Local 1440. Jackie also served on the National Board of the
Coalition of Labor Union Women. In the more recent past, Jackie
was awarded Seven Over Seventy awards given out to Senior
Citizens over the age of 70 that have made major contributions
to their community. Jackie was a political advocate for many
groups including seniors, children, people with disabilities,
and those in need of healthcare.
Jackie is survived by her children, Arthur Corbett and his wife,
Penny of Hanson, MA and Ruth Gallot and her husband, Bill of
Auburn, NH, and her brother, Arthur Harding, Jr.
Visitation will be at Weir - MacCuish Funeral Home, 144 Salem
Street, Malden on Friday, May 21, 2010 from 4 to 8 PM.
Funeral services will be held in the Good Shepherd United
Methodist Church, 577 Salem Street on Saturday, May 22, 2010 at
1 PM. Interment services will be held privately.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jackie’s memory may be made
to either The Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, 577 Salem
St. Malden or the Mystic Valley Elder Services, Development
Office, 300 Commercial St. #19, Malden, MA 02148.
