Teresa M. (Leary) Dempsey
Teresa M. (Leary)
Dempsey, a longtime resident of Malden passed away on Sunday,
February 6, at her home with her loving family by her side.
Teresa was born in Newton in 1927. She spent part of her
childhood in Somerville before moving to Malden. There she
attended Girls Catholic High School and graduated with the class
of 1945. She then attended Regis
and Staley Colleges
where she received her degree in education, and then later
received her Masters Degree in Education from Boston State
College. She first worked as a teacher in Malden as a
substitute for several years before taking a permanent position
with St. Catherine's of Genoa in Somerville. She taught first
grade and then 8th grade, and then became Principal of the
school. Under her leadership, the
school became one of 2 K-8 schools in the area
accredited by the N.E. Association of
Schools and Colleges. She retired from the school in 2002.
In 1947, Teresa
married her sweetheart, William T. J. Dempsey in St. Josephs
Church in Malden. They settled down in Malden to raise their
family. Bill and Terry shared nearly 64 wonderful and
happy years together. She was both a
loving homemaker and an excellent cook.
Terry was a
dedicated member of the Sacred Hearts Parish where she
was a member of the Christian Family
Movement, as well as serving as a Eucharistic Minister and a
Lector She was also a member of the Linwood Seniors
Organization, where she served on the
executive board. In years past, she was active with both the
Girl Scouts and the Cub Scouts, and was a Past Den Mother.
Terry was also a voracious reader. In addition, she was the
oldest grandmother ever to complete the Outward Bound Program at
Harvard University. Terry is survived
by her husband, William T.J. Dempsey of Malden, their children, James M. Dempsey and wife Kim of Malden, Joseph M. Dempsey and
wife Beverly of West Orange, NJ, Mary Ann Boari and husband
Douglas of Woburn, and Jean M. Perrigo and husband Douglas of
Tewksbury, and her grandchildren, Brian, William,
Carolyn, Tom, Michael, Anne Marie, Laura, and Mary Beth.
She was preceded
in death by her parents, Jeremiah and Mary (Leydon) Leary, and
her son William.
Funeral services
will be held Monday, February 21st, in Sacred Hearts
Church, 297 Main Street, Malden, at 10AM.
Committal will be private.
Visitation will
be at Weir - MacCuish Funeral Home, 144 Salem Street, Malden, on
Sunday, February 20th from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM
