Doucette


John A. Doucette of Malden, died Thursday, November 12, 2009 at
the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, he was 78. Born
on March 26, 1931 in Stoneham, he was the son of the late Carl
and Kathleen (McKenna) Doucette. John was raised and educated
in Melrose. At the age of 17, he entered into the US Navy to
help our country fight during the Korean War. He entered into
active duty on April 19, 1948 in Boston. Towards the conclusion
of his military time, John was awarded the Good Conduct Medal,
The United Nations Service Medal, the Navy Occupation Medal, and
the Korean Service Medal. John was honorably discharged after
serving 6 brave years on February 5, 1953. During his military
action, he was able to marry his sweetheart, Claire M. Walsh on
February 23, 1952 in Sacred Hearts Church in Malden. After he
finally returned home, John went to work for the Department of
Public Works in Malden. He worked for over 40 years, becoming
the Director by the time he retired in 1993.
John was very active in the community. John served as past
president of the Department of Public Works union and he was a
long-time member of the Malden Elks; serving as treasurer at one
point. He was also very active in the Retired Men’s Club of
Arlington. Both he and Claire were members of the Crystal
Community Club of Wakefield. They enjoyed traveling and R.V.ing
together. They also loved dancing together and even won an
award while on vacation in the Poconos. John also had a love
of golfing but his true passion was always his family.
John is survived by his wife Claire M. Doucette of Malden, his
daughters, Linda M. Cox of Peabody, Gail A. Surette and her
husband James Surette of Malden, Christine L. Barbas of Malden,
and Diane Doucette of Swampscott, his son-in-laws, Daniel Cox of
Andover and Nick Barbas of Woburn, his grandchildren, Jonathan Surette, US Navy,
Christopher and Amy Surette, Stephanie and Ryan Cox, and Ariana Barbas,
his sister, Carol Mulkern of Melrose as well as many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his
sister, Beverly Doucette.
Funeral from the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144
Salem Street, Malden on Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at 9 AM
followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Joseph's Church,
770 Salem Street, Malden at 10 AM. Rev. William J. Minigan,
Pastor of St. Joseph's Church will be presiding. Burial will
follow in the Forest Dale Cemetery in Malden.
Visitation will be held in the funeral home on Tuesday, November
17, 2009 from 4 to 8 PM.
