Lewis Earle Edson

Lewis E. Edson, a life-long resident of Malden, died Wednesday, September 22, 2010 in the North Shore Medical Center - Union Hospital in Lynn, he was 89.  Born on March 30, 1921 in Medford, he was the son of the late Ralph O. and Mildred P. (Barber) Edson.  At the age of four, Lewis and his family moved to Malden where he was raised and educated.  He was a graduate of Malden High School, Class of 1940.  On July 27, 1942, Lewis enlisted into the U.S. Army Air Corps to help fight for our country during World War II.  He served in the European Theatre of Operations for sixteen months during 1944 and 1945.  For his dedicated service, Lewis was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the America Theater Campaign Ribbon, the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon, and the Victory Medal.  Upon his Honorable Discharge on February 27, 1946, Lewis had attained the rank of Sergeant.

Lewis went to work for a number of years at Gordon’s Dress Shop in Malden.  He worked both in sales and in general maintenance.  After he left Gordon’s, Lewis embarked on a career he had a passion for; helping others in the Chelsea Soldier’s Home in Chelsea.  He served in many capacities; from being a helpful orderly, to assisting in nursing care duties, and ultimately being appointed unit supervisor.  After 32 years of dedicated service, Lewis retired from the Chelsea Soldier’s Home in 1981.

A lover of the outdoors and nature, Lewis relished the opportunity to sight-see.  Whether it was at various area beaches or the mansions in Newport, he always had his eyes open to the beauty of the world.  Lewis had a true love for baking, which went along with his love of food and good conversation with his family and friends.  Always having a caring heart, he was a lover of all animals, especially dogs and cats.  Coincidentally, he was remarkable at the “chicken dance,” which his family will always remember.  Through all his life’s accomplishments and achievements, Lewis’ true passion was always taking care of and enjoying the time spent with his loving family.

Mr. Edson is survived by his loving sister, Eva J. Marshall of Malden, his beloved great-nephew, Victor M. Mejias, Jr. of Malden and many nieces and nephews, many great-nieces and nephews, and many great-great-nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Lewis was preceded in death by his two brothers, Orrin R. and William Edson.
