Peter Joseph Francis Sr.

Peter Joseph Francis Sr., a longtime resident of Malden, passed away on Monday, April 26, 2010 at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital in Melrose, Massachusetts at the age of 85.

He was born May 25, 1924 in Portland, Maine, and at an early age moved to Chelsea, MA, where he was raised and educated.  He graduated from Chelsea High with the Class of 1942.  Growing up he was a proficient baseball player, and while playing for Chelsea in the city league,  he was drafted by the Red Sox as a pitcher.  Before he could join the team however, he was inducted into the US Navy to fight in WWII.  He entered the service in August of 1943, and most notably served aboard the USS Wasp,  an air craft carrier that saw direct action with the Japanese in the Pacific Theater.  He was discharged on St. Patrick’s Day, 1946, and injuries sustained in battle ended his hopes of joining the Red Sox organization upon his return.  He began working as a TV repairman,  and did this for many years until taking employment with the US Post Office.  He worked at the South Postal Annex in Boston as a mail sorter until his retirement around 1980.  Not one to slow down, he would always be helping his children and other family members with repairs and building projects around the house.  Peter never lost his love of baseball, and remained a dedicated fan of the Boston Red Sox, and also enjoyed watching the Boston Bruins.  He had a great love for dogs, and had a habit of keeping a pocket full of dog treats for his own dogs, as well as family and neighborhood dogs.  He also enjoyed spending his summers in Kingston, NH.  Peter was a lifetime member of the DAV of Massachusetts.

He is survived by his son Peter Francis, Jr and wife Joan (Bushnell) of North Andover, his daughters,  Patricia Zola and husband Andrew of Malden,  and Gail Doherty and husband Henry of Malden, his sister Alice Cole of RI, his brother Edwin Hubbard of Chelsea, and his grandchildren, Michael, Alyssia, Mathew, Kristen, and Amanda.

He was preceded in death by his wife Lorraine P. (Senchuck), his sisters, Elizabeth Smith, Millie Malek, and  his brother John Francis.
