Melvin Louis Garrett

Melvin L. Garrett,  died Monday,  November 3, 2008 at the Holy Family  Medical Center in Methuen after a short illness, he was 73. Melvin was born on October 24, 1935 the son of the late Frank & Anastasia (Dyke) Garrett. Mr. Garrett was born in Everett and attended the Revere school system. He graduated from the Everett Vocational School, Class of 1954, as a cabinet maker.  

 In the fall of 1954 Melvin joined the USMC to help fight for his country during the Korean Conflict. He served for the next three years and was discharged in September of 1957.

     In the fall of 1958 he would marry his sweetheart Barbara M. Melanson of Malden in the Grace Episcopal Church in Everett. The couple would later settle in Malden and raise their three children, Jay, Meredith and Ray.  Melvin and Barbara would share forty-seven years together until Barbara’s passing in March of 2005. The couple would have celebrated their fiftieth anniversary this Saturday.

     Melvin was a head maintenance engineer for the former  N.E.N.-DuPont Company of Boston. He worked for the company for thirty-five years and later retired in 1996. His son’s Jay & Ray had the pleasure of working with their dad at the plant during their early days. Mr. Garrett had lived in Malden since 1963 and later moved to his daughter home in Methuen. 

     Melvin along with his wife Barbara were longtime active member's of the former St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Malden,  serving as Senior Warden and other church posts throughout the years. Along with his wife Barbara, he enjoyed playing cards and was an avid New England Patriots and Red Sox fan. He enjoyed doing crafts and jobs around the house and he even built the kitchen cabinets in the family’s home. He loved his entire family and enjoyed his three grandchildren and his great-granddaughter.

     He is survived by children, Jay P. Garrett and his wife Nancy of Hampton, NH, Meredith  J. Vitale and her husband David of Methuen and Raymond A. Garrett and his wife Tina of Reading.  Loving brother of Fred Garrett of FL and his late wife Norma, Marion Maniff of Revere and her late husband Arthur, Stella Pierce and her husband Joe of Littleton, Jean Flight and her husband Don of Wilmington, Steve Garrett of Bradford and his late wife Penny, his late brother Harold and his wife Phyllis Garrett of Wilmington, his late brother Austin and his wife Millie Garrett of Revere, his late brother Lester and his wife Helen Garrett of FL, and his late sister Rita Garrett.  Melvin was the cherished grandfather of Jessica & Colleen Vitale, and Rachel Garrett, great grandfather of Veronica Fowler. 

 Friends and relatives are invited to visiting hours in the funeral home, on Thursday, November 6, 2008 from   4-8 PM. 

      Melvin’s funeral will be held from the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem Street, Malden on Friday, November 7, 2008 at 8 AM, followed by a service in the Chapel at the Woodlawn Cemetery, 302 Elm St., Everett at 9:30 AM, with interment to follow in the cemetery.
