Betty Marlin Gates

    

     Of South Yarmouth, MA passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 9, 2009, she was 88.  She was the eldest daughter of the late Janette (Nourse) Marlin and John Joseph Marlin.  She graduated from Medford High School in 1938, attended Burdett College in Boston, and Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing. She became the first woman Vice-President of Malden Savings Bank, Malden, MA, and was also a President of the Bedford, MA Arts and Crafts Society where she won awards for her art work. While living in Florida, she taught many forms of creative quilting and sewing.  She was married to the love of her life, Ralph Hanson Gates, from 1941 ‘til his death in 1989.  Betty is survived by five loving children: Sandra (Gates) Martines and husband Frank of West Yarmouth, MA; Nancy (Gates) Hanright of Alta Loma, CA; Karen (Gates) Waterman and husband Peter of West Yarmouth, MA; Ralph Hanson Gates II and wife Beverly of Port Charlotte, FL; and Melody (Gates) Littles-Rougui and husband Annys of Malden, MA.  Also survived by a sister, Evelyn Lord and husband Samuel of Beaumont, TX; and a brother, Paul Marlin and wife Virginia of North Reading, MA.  She also leaves behind many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held in the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem St. MALDEN on Wednesday, September 16, 2009 from 11 AM to 12:30 PM.  A funeral service will immediately follow the visitation at 12:30 PM.  Rev. Ruth R. Odour, Pastor of the Good Shepherd Christ United Methodist Church will be officiating.  Burial will follow in the Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody.
