Philip E. Gillette

Philip Edward Gillette, 80, a longtime resident of Malden, died Thursday, November 6, 2008, surrounded by family after a lengthy illness.

Phil was raised in Malden and was a graduate of Malden High School and Malden Business School. After serving his country in the US Army in World War II, Phil married the late Pauline Crafts of Everett, who he called “the most beautiful person I ever met.” The couple settled in the Maplewood section of Malden, in a house next to Trafton Park, where they raised nine children, all graduates of Malden High School.

Phil had a long career specializing in mortgages and loans at The Malden Savings Bank, later named The Bank for Savings, where he retired as Senior Vice President in 1990. He was also active in the Men’s Club at St. Joseph’s Church and was a coach in the Malden American Little League for over 25 years, helping the Astros capture multiple City Series championships.

Phil was known as a straight shooter with neither the time nor inclination for pretense. The only place he didn’t shoot straight was on the golf course, but he could chip and putt with the best of them. He organized regular “crack of dawn” Saturday golf groups for many years, first at Colonial in Lynnfield and later at Hickory Hill in Methuen. Some of his best memories are from late winter trips to Myrtle Beach, where he would golf with friends 36 holes a day. In his final years he wintered in Royal Palm Beach, FL, but he never quite adapted to the concept of “leisurely” golf.

Phil was an avid Boston sports fan.  He had season tickets throughout the Celtics Dynasty, was an original season ticket holder for the Patriots and was thrilled he lived long enough to see the Red Sox win the World Series.

At a celebration of his 70th Birthday, Phil said “I’ve had the best life. I couldn’t imagine being much happier. If I die tomorrow, I’d have no complaints. I’ve had a great time.”

Phil is survived by his nine children, Pauline Maxwell and her husband Jack of Santa Barbara, CA, Philip Gillette and his wife JoAnne of Manchester, Robert Gillette and his wife Paula of Malden, Michael Gillette and his wife Sharon of Medford, Peter Gillette of Malden, James Gillette and his wife Patricia of Andover, Anne Dever and her husband Phil of Andover, Dale Gillette and his wife Jacqueline of Andover and Daniel Gillette and his wife Dawn of Andover. He is also survived by his brother Richard Gillette and his wife Eleanor of Woburn, as well as 30 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Funeral from Weir MacCuish Funeral Home, 144 Salem Street, Malden on Monday, November 10, 2008 at  8:30 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph’s Church, 770 Salem Street, Malden, MA at 10 AM. Internment will be in Forest Dale Cemetery, Malden.

Visitation will be held in the Weir MacCuish Funeral Home, 144 Salem Street, Malden, MA on Sunday, November 9, 2008 from 4-8 PM.
