Dorothy May Hagen
Dorothy May Hagen, 90, of Melrose, formerly of Malden and Wakefield, passed away at the at Epoch Senior Healthcare of Melrose in August 1st. She was born May 24, 1921 in Georgetown, MA, the daughter of David W. Ross and Sarah J. (MacDonald ) Ross. . Dorothy came to Malden in her teens, where she completed her education and graduated from Malden High School. In 1939, she married her sweetheart, John D. Hagen, and the two settled down in Malden to raise their family. Soon the country found itself in WWII and Dorothy served stateside as a Civil Defense Air Warden. Dorothy and John shared 25 years together until John’s untimely passing in 1964. Dorothy worked for Transitron in Malden before becoming a home health aide with Mystic Valley Elder Services. She really enjoyed her job and worked well into her 70's before retiring. Dorothy had been a long time active member of the Order of Eastern Star, and more recently she had enjoyed spending time at the Milano Center in Melrose, where she would socialize with friends and play some bingo. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy M. George of Melrose, her son John D. Hagen Jr. of Salem as well as five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband John, her daughter Gloria M. Peck; her daughter Frances Hagen, her brother David Ross, and her sisters, Mildred McGrath, Grace Manley, and Frances McGee, and her longtime companion, Robert Nugent. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 6, 2011 at 11:00 AM at the Weir- MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem Street, Malden, with visitation for 1 hour prior. Burial will follow in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose. Donations in Dorothy’s memory may be made to Hallmark Health Hospice, 178 Savin Street,Suite 300, Malden, MA 02148.
