Dorothy Barbara Handspicker

 

     Dorothy Barbara Handspicker died at Massachusetts General Hospital on August 26 after a long illness.  A resident of Malden, Massachusetts, she was born in Ogunquit, Maine on July 3rd 1916.  Her parents were Jeremiah Ellis Handspicker and Sara Samantha Purdy.  She was a graduate of Wells High School and began her vocation as a care-giver serving as a nursemaid in Aurora, New York. During World War II she served the US Navy in the WAVES as a Hospital Apprentice First Class.  After the war she went to secretarial school and graduated as a medical assistant. 

     She began her work as a medical assistant with gynecologist Dr. Roland P. Wilder in Malden in 1948 and served him and his patients until 1977.  During that time she became active in the American Association of Medical Assistants and served as its president in 1977.  After Dr. Wilder’s retirement she continued as a medical assistant to Dr. Burton C. Goldberg, also in Malden.  

     First Church in Malden (Congregational) was her spiritual home, and she was active in its affairs.  In addition to church work, reading was her favorite hobby.  She had many friends, including former patients.  During her last years she had the support of friends and family, especially Merryl Plasse and her son Corey Buckingham, and her own niece, Ruth White.

     Her parents, her brother, Meredith Purdy Handspicker, and sisters Frances Alberta White and Ruth Elizabeth Handspicker, predeceased her. She is survived by her nephews Meredith and Brian Handspicker and Daniel and Gerry White and by her niece Ruth White as well as grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.

             A memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 16, at 1:00 p. m. in First Church in Malden.  Interment will be in First Parish (UCC) Cemetery in York, Maine at the family’s convenience.  Anyone wishing to remember Dorothy may make donations in her name to the memorial fund of First Church (Congregational) Malden.  Arrangements by the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem St. Malden, MA.
