Norman St. Clair Hebb

 

     Norman S. Hebb of Malden died Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at Bear Hill Nursing Center in Stoneham, he was 87.   Born on October 13, 1921, he was the son of the late Clayton and Helen (Bolivar) Hebb.  Growing up in Maine on a farm, he moved to Massachusetts in 1938.  Norman was a graduate of Somerville High School with the Class of 1940.  After high school, Norman worked as a carpenter for a couple of years before enlisting in the US Navy on October 1, 1942 to help fight for the allies during in WWII.  Norman served in the South Pacific as a Motor Machinist Mate, 2nd Class aboard both the George Clymer and President Jackson ships.  Both vessels were amphibious personal attack ships that transported troops to land drop-off points were they were deployed into battle.  He was stationed in Guadal Canal, Okinawa, Guam, Iwo Jima, and Einiwietok, serving both abroad and ashore.  Norman was honorably discharged from active duty on December 14, 1945 and was awarded with the World War II Victory Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Area: 4 Stars, the Philippine Liberation: 1 Star, as well as the Good Conduct Medal. 

     Upon his return home in December of 1945, Norman went to work with his father and uncle in their own building company as vice president.  Middlesex Building Corporation constructed luxury homes in the Greater Newton area.  Working for over 43 years, Norman retired in 1988 and his retirement brought him much joy.  Norman loved his cottage in New Hampshire, working in his gardens at home, and, first and foremost, he loved the time spent with friends and family.  

     Norman is survived by his wife, Estelle S. (Martin) Hebb of Malden, his children, Randolph E. Hebb and his wife, Mary of Connecticut and Wendy D. Conrad and her husband, Thomas of Malden, his grandchildren, Todd Newman of Malden, Rachel and Emily Hebb, both of Connecticut, his sister, Margaret Ugolini of Boylston, his cousins, Norman and Wayne Bolivar and their families as well as many nieces, nephews, and good friends.

     A funeral service will be held in the Weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home on Monday, August 10, 2009 at 12:30 PM.  Burial will follow in the Forest Dale Cemetery, Malden.

Visitation will be held in the funeral home on Sunday, August 9, 2009 from 3 to 7 PM.
