Bertha Evelyn Holmes
Bertha E. Holmes, died Saturday, August 9, 2008 at the Golden Living Center,
Dexter House in Malden, she was 95. Bertha was born in Melrose on June 1, 1913
the daughter of the late Charles D. Holmes and Mary E. Singer. She was raised
and educated in Wakefield.
Bertha worked for the Continental Can Company and later as a waitress for eight
years at Russo’s Restaurant in Malden Square. She later worked for the Malden
Home for the Aging from 1975-1980 until her retirement later in the year.
Bertha had been a resident of Malden for over sixty-five years. She spent most
of her time caring for her loving sister Mildred. The two sisters’ could be seen
walking up Salem St. in Malden most days during the week, taking care of
errands, enjoying the day or doing their shopping.
She
is survived by her sister, Mildred F. Holmes of Malden, her nieces, Edith
Courter of New Jersey, Helen Blocker of Florida and nephew George Gilman of
Florida. Bertha was also survived by numerous great nieces and nephews and
numerous great-great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by
her sister’s Mabel Chenard formerly of NH, and Edith Gilman formerly of Malden.
Visitation will be held in
the Weir~ MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem St. Malden on Tuesday,
August 12, 2008 from 7-9 PM.
Funeral services will
be held on Wednesday, August 13, 2008 at 10:00 A.M. in the Weir Funeral Home.
Burial will follow in Forest Dale Cemetery, Malden.
