Orin Delbert Hood

Retired Sergeant Malden Police

A Naturalist  &  Animal Lover

Orin D. Hood, of Saugus formerly a lifetime resident of Malden died Saturday evening September 12, 2009, at the Hammersmith Nursing Care Center, in Saugus. He was 100.  Mr. Hood was born on November 14, 1908 in Malden, the son of the late Orin D. & Ella (Gavin) Hood.  Orin was educated in the Malden School system.

Mr. Hood joined the Malden Police Department and served for many years as a sergeant. He was a self taught electronics expert and was put in charge of the radio equipment at the police station. This talent later got him employment with the US Government on Johnston Island.  While on the police force in the early sixties, on a cold winter day, Orin was out on patrol when he was struck by a car and  was forced into early retired.   Doctors told him he would never walk again but due to his tenacity he regained his walking ability and proved them wrong.

Orin was considered a naturalist, an animal lover, artist, poet, craftsman and an avid gardener and photographer.  He visited Plum Island and would walk the beach and find driftwood, coral and other ocean objects to make crafts that he would later sell at the church fair or gift shops. His love for oil painting of the sea and landscapes lead to art shows featuring his paintings along with his many poems which won him many awards.  His gardening skills also won him an award for “Best Garden in Malden”.   His garden was always blooming all year long with different flowers, keeping him very busy.

In his spare time Orin volunteered at the Museum of Science in Boston and at the Audubon Society, Ipswich River Sanctuary. He enjoyed nature and would host walking tours in the woods pointing out edible plants, wild flowers and the wildlife they came across. He was also a member of the Malden Artist Guild and a longtime member of the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in Malden.

Orin was the beloved husband of fifty years to the late Elna G. (Kellstrom) Hood. Elna passed a way sixteen years ago. Orin is presently married to Florence (Doone) Hood of Saugus. He was the loving father of Orin D. Hood of Thailand & Pamela R. Hood of Georgetown. He was the cherished grandfather of Andrew Skobe, Kristen Ribeiro, Matthew Skobe and Rebecca O’Donnell and the loving great-grandfather of nine. He was preceded in death by his brother George, and his sisters Ella, Millie, and Gertrude.

Contributions in his memory may be made to Mass Audubon Society, 208 South Great Rd., Lincoln, MA  01773 or www.massaudubon.org/donate. There will be no visiting hours. Friends and relatives are invited to a Memorial Service in the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, 577 Salem St., Malden on Thursday, September 17, 2009 at 10 AM. Rev. Ruth R. Oduor will be officiating. An interment in Forest Dale Cemetery, Malden will be scheduled at a later date.
