Edward Joseph Kelly, 82, a  firefighter for the Boston Fire Department died Saturday, July 11, 2009 at the Lighthouse Nursing Care Center in Revere.  Ed was born and raised in East Boston.  Like many of his day, he left high school early to enlist in the US Navy to help our country fight in WWII.  He later completed his education and received his GED.  After three years of service, Ed was honorably discharged, having attained the rank of Seaman First Class.

After the war, Edward returned to East Boston. In November of 1948, he married his sweetheart, Eileen Anderson, in Sacred Hearts Church in East Boston.  The two settled down first in East Boston. The two shared 56 years together, and only apart 3 years since Eileen’s passing in July of 2006.  In 1962, they moved to Malden to continue raising their family.   By this time, Ed had joined the Boston Fire Department.  He proudly served as a firefighter for many years until his retirement in 1991.  Ed was an avid sports fan and he also enjoyed settling down with a good book

He is survived by his daughters, Kathleen A. and husband Paul Lombard of Virginia Beach, VA, Patricia  and husband Henry Cornoni of Malden, Eileen Kelly of Everett, and Noreen A. and husband James Bartolo of Melrose, his sisters, Ruth Alexander of Lynn and Dorothy Merullo of East Boston, as well as five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Eileen (Anderson), his parents, John L. and Margaret (Thornton) Kelly, his brother, John Kelly, and his great grandson, Ethan Lombard.

Visitation will be held at Weir MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem Street, Malden on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 from 4-8 PM.
