Richard Stephen “Dickie” Kinnon

 

     Richard S. “Dickie” Kinnon, of Malden, died Tuesday, April 13, 2010 in the Glenridge Nursing Care Center in Medford, he was 94.  Born on September 2, 1915 in Malden, he was the son of the late James W. and Alice S. (Stafford) Kinnon.  Richard was raised and educated in Malden.  After high school, he joined the U. S. Army to help fight for our country during World War II.  Richard enlisted at Fort Devens on May 27, 1942.   He was honorably discharged after three and half years of service on October 24, 1945.  At the time of his separation, Richard had attained the rank of Corporal and had been awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the EAME Theater Service Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. After the war, Richard married his sweetheart, Mary F. Schifferdecker on April 24, 1946 in St. Peter’s Church in Cambridge.  The couple spent over fifty in marriage together, raising and caring for their family until Mary’s passing in September of 1997.  Richard worked for many years at a wool manufacturing company as well as two paper companies.  He also worked nights in The U.S Post office.  Eventually, Richard found work as a shipper and receiver for Sears until his retirement at the age 62 in 1979.  Richard was very involved in various fraternal and veteran organizations.  He served as past president of the Ancient Order of Hibernians.  He was a long-time member of both the Irish American Club as well as the VFW of Malden.  Richard enjoyed horse racing as well as vegetable gardening.  He enjoyed the occasional trip to Foxwoods but most of all, he enjoyed the time spent with his family.

     Richard is survived by his children, Anne M. Webster of Malden, Catherine M. Boggie of Dedham, Patricia R. Eaton of Wakefield, Richard G. Kinnon of Londonderry, NH, and Theresa M. Smith of Saugus, his siblings, Lawrence Kinnon of Malden, Eleanor Tuxbury of Malden, and Virginia Morley of Malden, fourteen grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.

     In addition to his wife and parents, Richard was preceded in death by his siblings, Frederick, Albert, Robert, James, Joseph, and Clement Kinnon, and Constance Pereira.

     Funeral from the weir-MacCuish Golden Rule Funeral Home, 144 Salem Street, Malden on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at 10 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Joseph’s Church, 770 Salem Street, Malden, at 11AM.  Burial will follow in the Cambridge Cemetery, Cambridge.

    Visitation will be held in the funeral home on Monday, April 19, 2010 from 4 to 8 PM.

     Contributions in Richard’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
