Mary LaFauci
Mary
(Zampitella) LaFauci of Melrose, formerly of Malden, died Wednesday, June 24,
2009 at her home in Melrose surrounded by her loving family, she was 64. Born
on August 6, 1944 in Revere, Mary was the daughter of the late Arthur and
Henrietta "Hedy" (Kelly) Zampitella and the daughter-in-law of the late Frank
and Eva LaFauci.
Mary
was raised and educated in Malden and was a graduate of Malden High School with
the Class of 1962. After high school, Mary was accepted into the Malden
Hospital School of Nursing but circumstances prevented her from enrolling at
that time. Mary went on to take classes at the Malden Business School and after
she graduated, she began to work for McFadden Memorial Manor in Malden. Mary
married her sweetheart, John J. LaFauci, in St. Joseph’s Church on June 18,
1966. John and Mary settled in Malden to raise and care for their family. From
1972 to 2003, Mary assumed many positions at McFadden including: Head
Administrative Clerk, Patient Services Supervisor, as well as Administrative
Assistant / Admissions Coordinator. Mary continued her schooling at Salem State
College by studying accounting, business, and computer science. Mary was
passionate and dedicated to McFadden and worked tirelessly with the residents
and their families. In 2003, Mary decided to retire from McFadden in order to
pursue her first, true passion which was nursing.
Mary
enrolled in Soldier’s Home School of Practical Nursing and was a graduate in
2006. Mary frequently welcomed her classmates to her home, treating them to
home-cooked meals followed by a study group. Given that Mary was the oldest
student in the class and the fact she was so gracious to her fellow classmates,
the students affectionately called her “Momma Mary.” Mary was both honored and
proud when she was awarded the Janet D’Alelio Award for Academic Excellence upon
her graduation. Mary was currently working at Hallmark Health and was attending
classes at Regis College, working towards her Registered Nurses’ license.
Mary
was very involved in both the Malden and Melrose communities. She served on the
board of Melrose Youth Hockey Association for many years and was the past vice
president of the Malden City Employees Credit Union. Mary was also currently on
the Board of Directors for the Eliot Community Human Services. Mary held a
special place in her heart for the Zonta Club of Malden. She served the club in
many capacities, most notably as a past president. Mary was a driving force
behind the “Women Making a Difference” award dinners. Her attention to detail
and enthusiasm always assured that the dinners and various club events were
always a success.
Despite her active community involvement, Mary always had time for her family.
As the “family social director,” Mary loved to cook for large family gatherings
and holidays. The first Saturday of every August is known as “Kelly Day,” where
she and John have huge family gatherings at their summer home on Arlington Pond
in Salem, NH. A woman who would welcome people with open arms into her home and
was giving and gracious not only to her family and friends, but to the community
as well, Mary truly was a “Woman Making a Difference.”
Mary
is survived by her husband of 43 years, John J. LaFauci of Melrose, her sons,
